TC 9.50 pointer issue: Invalid pointer operation (Win XP)

by michellondon
I was looking for program files sorted by extension in different directories with Total Commander 9.50 as suggested on the main page (Note: For critical data, please use Total Commander 9.50 final!), since if I used the new version TC 9.51 RC2 it wasn't sure enough if I was working with critical data. I was doing this when suddenly a message appeared with the following content:

---------------------------
Total Commander 9.50
---------------------------
Invalid pointer operation.
Invalid pointer operation
Windows XP SP3 5.1 (Build 2600), base: 00400000

Could you please explain what you were doing when you got this error? Are you able to reproduce it?

The stack trace doesn't contain any Total Commander code.

Just as explained in the post: I was looking for some program files sorted by extension. Nothing else. I´ve tried to reproduce my actions using TC 9.50 with the same directories and same files and no new message appeared. I tried the same with TC 9.50a RC1 and TC 9.51 RC2 and no message on the screen.

Check your RAM for hardware problems.

I was looking for some program files
Does that mean that you were just browsing around, or were you using the Search function?

Just provide step-by-step instructions rather than explanations, please.

I was just browsing around some crowded of files directories and to make things clear to me I decided to sort by extension the large quantity of them all.
One of the directories had mp4, flv, avi, mkv, mpg, mpeg, video files with the respective srt or ssa subtitles and text files explaining what they were about, jpg and png posters when they belonged to films files, xml an db for more order and a lot of pictures photos from the films actors actresses and sequential photos of the movies. I was moving the cursor down to see what kind of material I could find in this directory and in doing so a message appeared telling about the invalid pointer operation which i copied to the clipboard and saved and sent it to the forum!!!

Step-by-step in points, using short phrases and simple English, if possible, please. See for example the latest reports:

Did you have QuickView turned on (viewing the content of the files in the opposite file panel)?

I didn´t have QuickView turned on and the content of the files in the opposite file panel was similar to the one I was investigating. It´s important to mention that I had installed your "Extended Menus for TC 9.50 - Updated February 12th 2020" XP version (which as you know I´m very fond of) and that was done before the previously mentioned actions!!! :D :D :D

Could you try with RC4? I made a lot of stability improvements, and it is now more stable than 9.50.

Everything was going O.K. with TC 9.51 RC4, I tried to repeat my actions to see what happened. Then I tried to copy some files from one panel to the other:
1. Panel Left USB drive formatted at Fat32 with 29 Gb free.
2. Panel Right WD external drive with very big ripped movies on the limit of 4Gb (I want to see if I can copy the file)
3. Message from the system: you cannot copy etc.
4. Appears a message from TC 9.51 RC4:

---------------------------
Total Commander 9.51 RC4
---------------------------
Invalid pointer operation.

Unfortunately I cannot reproduce this, so I need more information. Here is what I tried:
1. Insert USB stick, FAT32 formatted.
2. Tried to copy 6GB file to it with F5
-> Error "The file xcz is larger than 4 GB!
This is too large for the file system on the target drive!"
3. Clicked Skip or abort
-> The dialog box and progress dialog disappeared, no crash or error.

Did you do anything different?

I did exactly as you describe. But to choose the files I wanted to copy I had opened in the background Disk Space Analizer (Glary Utilities Pro last version), JDownloader 2 had finished working but it was opened too and the Task Manager there in the background just in case and also Speaking Clock and f.lux v4.114 beta.

Do you have one of the auto-refresh options enabled? They are in the lower half of
