FTP and Yahoo

Post by *rlacayo »

Hi all, I have a website with Yahoo, web hosting services, I also have set up user accounts to control how other people access my web site. I have several directories created in order to restrict users to access these access points. Each user has their own username and passwords.

My question: How do I configure TC so the person using TC can use the FTP command and access their own folder, without entering to others folders?

Thanks, anyone that could help would be great!! 8)

Access control isn't the job of the client, it's the job of the server - in this case, the ftp server. Many ftp servers allow to set a different home directory for each user account.

Thanks. That's what I thought. I did create a home directory for each user, but I can't seem to access it correctly from TC.

The only way I can access FTP is with the administrators username and password, and the admin. has all permissions asigned. So the question is: can I asign FTP from TC so that the user can access the home directoy that they have asigend?

I would truly apreciate all the help.
Thanks!

You need to configure the ftp server accordingly: Create a new Ftp user in the server, assign a password and a home directory to it. Then when the user accesses the server with his specific user name and password, he will be redirected by the SERVER to his home directory.

I CAN'T GET IT!

Post by *rlacayo »

 I'm sorry christian, I tried it and tried it, and I can't seem to get it right, I'll copy a help file that I found in yahoo ... this one is about publishing with go live, but maby it will give you an idea... or me an idea ...

To publish your site with GoLive, you'll need to set up an FTP connection to the Yahoo! servers. Important: Before you set up FTP access, make sure that you have TCP/IP networking set up properly on your computer. Consult your computer's help files for details.

To set up a connection to the Yahoo! FTP server:

1. From the "Edit" menu, choose "Servers." You can also display the "Available Servers" dialog box by choosing "Edit Server" from the "Server" menu in Site Settings, the FTP browser dialog box, or the WebDAV Browser dialog box.
2. Click the "New" button in the Available Servers dialog box.
3. Type a name for this connection in the "Nickname" text box (yahoo, for example). This will help you avoid confusion if you add more servers to the "Available Servers" list.
4. Here you'll need to enter your FTP settings. You can find your FTP settings on the Create & Update and Manage tabs of your Web Hosting Control Panel, in the Web Hosting Account Details module under "FTP Account Info." (Learn more about FTP.)
* Enter your host (such as ftp.yourdomain.com) in the "Server" text box. The address must start with "ftp://" for FTP servers and "http://" for WebDAV servers.
* Leave the "Directory" box empty.
* Enter your user ID in the "User Name" field.
* Select "Save" and enter your Yahoo! password in the "Password" text box.
5. Click "Advanced" and complete the following:
* Select "Use Passive Mode." Passive FTP enables your local software to set up an FTP connection rather than asking the remote server to set it up (this option is blocked by Yahoo! for your protection).
* Select "Keep Connections Alive" to prevent timeouts due to inactivity.
* For Mac OS only: Keep the "Use ISO 8859-1 Translation" option selected to use the Latin 1 character encoding set, which encompasses the majority of Western European languages.
* Select "Resolve Links" to compare your local files with those on your FTP server.
6. Click "OK" to save your settings.

Any suggestions??!

For Your connection :
Session : Admin Main connection
Host Name : the ftp adress (without ftp:// ) precise the port number if needed
User name : Your admin username
Password : Your admin password
Check Use passive mode

For your user, if you have set their account correctly, the only things that differs are:
Session: UserName Test Connection
UserName: Put Their username
Password: Put Their password

It works for me (not on Yahoo! but with my web host...)

Thank you very much for you're response.

I've tried that also, but it seems to work only for the >> Session:Admin Main connection. Maby it's something wrong with the permission in Yahoo. I'll try to see if something else is going on.

Thanks for you're support. :D
