Where are the lines?
Just trying out TC - have tried most of the file managers, but THE single most important thing ( for me) I can't find on a first quick look around.
That is--where are the lines in the " Details" View?
Without this the App is totally unfriendly and (again for me) useless. Maybe I missed something obvious?
Can someone please tell me where they are? Thanks Ian. ( Island of Malta)

What do you exactly mean?hulland wrote:That is--where are the lines in the " Details" View?
I believe you are talking about the "Details view" that Win XP shows for a file/folder/etc. at the left pane by default.
TC actually shows more info that Windwos Explorer does: size, date, extension and, with the use of Content plugins, you can have: office document attributes, bitrate, length in mm:ss, etc. for media files, bitdepth, width and height for image files and much, much more.
If you really miss the traditional "Details" view, you could try the IEview plugin: http://www.totalcmd.net/plugring/ieview.html
Hope this helps.

You are completely right, I missed the "the lines" part of the sentence. Hence, my previous post is completely irrelevant. That is--where are the lines in the " Details" View?
Yes, I do not miss the grid-lines at all. I have even hidden these forever in Excel in the startup template...

Well, TC's biggest competitor has grid-lines and it's called Speed Commander...
Then there is xplorer2, A43, ExplorerXP, freeCommander, Frigate, etc...
What file managers have you seen so far?
The better question would be: "Which file manager DO NOT have grid-lines or even better alternating row colors support?"

Rows colours: yes!

- This is a feature I would support strongly ! It should allow to use many more colours for the file-types !…or even better alternating row colors support?"

I worry, that the using of too many colors gives a rather confusing result.
My suggestion: An additional option for different font styles (italic, bold, italic+bold and strike-through should be enough for everyone
). OK, this wouldn't work with some fonts, panels have to be redesigned to support rich text, and so on...

Talking about two user-defined colors here only, not an exploded rainbow.I worry, that the using of too many colors gives a rather confusing result.

I have requested a gridlines option for years. The problem I think has to do with the control that Mr. Ghisler uses for the file panels. Sometimes the development "cost" for what appear to be trivial customizations is too much to make such an option a priority for him.
I personally would like both subtle gridlines AND alternating row shading AND column shading schemas along with a mechanism to manage (define, assign, save, restore) different views.
On the other hand, now that custom columns are available, the single most important enhancement for me would be the ability to arbitrarily lock some columns ("freeze panes" in Excel jargon) so that I could scroll across them but leave the filename visible (another one of those functions not supported by the panel control without jumping through hoops)..
Oh yeh, that and the ability to save the file filter for each individual tab...

Right, actually speaking about grid-lines or (two) alternating colours for background of rows. I refered to Clo's posting: He wants to use background colours as an additional option to colour files by type.icfu wrote:Talking about two user-defined colors here only, not an exploded rainbow.![]()

2JohnFredC I support all your suggestions.
I don't know, which information are available at plugins interface, if a plugin, when active, takes command or if there is a way to communicate with TC further on... Maybe a (not yet existing) special file system plugin or lister plugin would be able to act as "overlaid style plugin"?
Two or plain is enough

Hi !
- I said "colours", but not necessarily a huge bunch of colours ! Like Jeff <icfu> says, two colours -one dark and one light- would do the trick, and would be so simple to add as options like :
- In such a way, it should be possible to use many more colours than currently; and the actual way could be chosen too…
What do you think ?
Kind regards,
Claude

- Of course, the reference to 0, 1, 2 might be added in the colour-filters using an appropriate syntax. A choice might be added there too…----- Panels background (from the actual combobox) -----
[•] Single plain colour {0} [>>>]
[•] Light & dark backgrounds

Dark background {2} [>>>]

Hi,
would be nice
I assume, that it wouldn't be harder to implement a free choice for background colours. As JohnFredC mentioned, the user should decide, which style fits best. If so, you could design a colourful TC... and you would be free to use only a limited amount of (3) colours.
Your posting (varying coloured bullets) inspired me for the following idea:
What do you think about user defined columns (as "Global DIZ"-plugin already provides) or one TC-internal column at least, which can show graphical elements (small ICO or GIF symbols)? The columns values could be defined as links to any image file, TC reads them and displays the graphics. Hope, this idea isn't too foolish
