Total Commander 9.51 64bit - issue with bin & ax files

Whenever I'm searching inside Total Commander 9.51 64bit (2020-03-25), in the Steam directory, Total Commander always seems to have trouble loading the content of any folder(s) and files, if that folder contains a .bin file, or an .ax file. If I wait long enough, it will eventually open the other folder, yet when I'm in that folder and want to get back to the previous folder, the one with the .bin or .ax file, Total Commander has again trouble working properly.
Even if the .bin file or .ax file is 1Megabyte, Total Commander has trouble working properly.

Total Commander just hangs and is totally not responding anymore. I need to ctrl+alt+delete and force quit Total Commander.
I'm using Windows 10 64bit and have 16GB DDR4 RAM. The OS is running on a SSD.

First thing to try is a fresh wincmd.ini by running

Code: Select all

totalcmd64.exe /i="%temp%\fresh.ini"
If the issue is still present, temporarily disable your anti-virus software to see if that makes it any better.

My anti-virus was already disabled (because I always do some testing myself) and I just did your code, but that didn't solve anything... :-(
(Disabling my anti-virus or enabling it, doesn't seem to fix things.)

I just tried something, stupid,...
I setted the "Icons" from "All associated + EXE" to "All associated" and that seemed to work. TC is now working speedy and fast and when I open a folder full of .bin and .ax files it opens them without any lag or freezing! :o

EDIT : When I changed it from "All associated" back to "All associated + EXE", it now also loads everything properly with no lag or no freezes.
Every .ax file now shows a file with a red "ax" written in it. So that's solved. No idea how TC was having trouble before all this... :? :? :?

Update, when I launched TC 5 minutes ago, I went back to the trouble folder, the one with .bin and .ax files, TC had again trouble.
So I switched Icons back to "All associated" in the menu. Now it's working smoothly again, I don't know for how long.
When I check that trouble folder with Windows Explorer, Windows Explorer never run into issues.

You can define a fixed icon for the .ax file via menu Files - Internal associations. Add a type like
*.ax
and just set the icon, and leave the rest unchanged.

No TC had trouble recognizing or loading the default ax and bin icons when I opened the folder that contains those files.
I solved it by opening TC menu \ Configuration \ Options \ Icons \ All associated ticked.

Yes, but this also turns off per file icons for EXE and LNK files, you only get a default icon.
With my solution, you set the .ax type to a fixed icon, while keeping the EXE/LNK icons.

When I check the registry key Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.bin\OpenWithList it's opened with PowerISO.
When using Windows 10 \ defaultapps \ file \ bin , it's indeed opened by PowerISO.

I have Googled for your internal association and it found many websites and this link https://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=27132

What exactly do I need to do?

What is complicated on that what Christian said ?

I was struggling with the fact, if he meant the menu in Windows 10 or the menu in Total Commander.
But rest assured, I have checked Total Commander, switched the language to English and I saw "Internal associations (Total Commander Only)
So I have added *.ax and *.bin now.

You did not set any icons for the file types! This means that TC will still try to get the original icons as if there were no internal associations.

So in the dialog "Edit file type", click on "Change icon" and pick one. You can use icons from totalcmd.exe/totalcmd64.exe, wcmicons.dll, or shell32.dll, they all contain many icons. It's sufficient to enter the name by hand and press TAB to see the included icons.

Allright. Changed it to :

[Selection]
0=*.ax
1=*.bin

[Associations]
Filter1=*.bin
Filter1.icon=shell32.dll,27
Filter2=*.ax
Filter2.icon=shell32.dll,27

Tested it 3 times. TC is working normally. Lets reboot Windows 10 and lets retest this...

EDIT: Seems to be working without any issue or loading behaviour. :) (seems there is no thumbs up smiley :oops: )

Thanks :!:
