Additional information in *.lng files

Post by *gmb »

In thread "Language Bar for TC 10.00" there was a question about who is a translator for one language.
I checked all *.lng files included in Petermad's collection and I could see that first lines, the language names shown in "Configuration - Options - Language", are pretty chaotic and confusing.

Somewhere there's Native (English): Čeština (Czech)
Somewhere there's English (Native): Albanian (shqip)
Somewhere there's Native only: Français
Somewhere there's English only: Georgian
Somewhere there's a county name instead of a language: Nederlands
Somewhere there's also name(s) of translator(s): Srpski (latinica) - B. Mihaljev, D. Grbić, S. Lalić
Somewhere there's TC version stated: Korean (한국어 for 10.0)

Well... not a big issue, there's not many people who need all available languages, but still...

Then, some translators added additional information in *.lng file:

Беларуская (Belarusian)
©Пераклаў Ігар Герасімовіч, заўвагі дасылаць на propoyskOtut.by

正體中文 (Traditional Chinese)
Updated by sky 2021/6/10

Hebrew (עברית)
righttoleft
codepage=1255
; מגרסה 10.00 ומעלה Total Commander התרגום הזה הוא מיועד לתוכנית
;
; Translated by Yossi Ezra
;

I think that it would be nice if all translators use identical, uniform solution, like this:

<LANGUAGE NATIVE NAME AND SCRIPT> (<LANGUAGE ENGLISH NAME>)
righttoleft <!-- if applicable -->
codepage=<CODEPAGE>
Total Commander <VERSION>
Updated: <DATE>
Translator(s): <NAME> (<EMAIL (OPTIONAL)>)

For example:

tlhIngan Hol (Klingon)
codepage=738962
Total Commander 10.00
Updated: 29 September 2021
Translator(s): Gowron (gowron123@d'k_tahg.mIS)

In the first line there's native name and English name in brackets: Беларуская (Belarusian)
Could be vice versa: Belarusian (Беларуская). We can discus about that, but it seams that most translators put native name first.

Next lines righttoleft and codepage are the same as they are now.
In some translations there's no codepage stated.

In next, new line, there's Total Commander version. With this line one can know for which version is *.lng file intended. Is it updated or obsolete.
Could be "Localization for Total Commander version" (to long) or just "Version" (short), but I think "Total Commander 10.00" would be the best.

Then we have date when the *.lng file is updated. Useful to see how old is the translation and if someone made some corrections but for the same TC version.

And finally there's name(s) of the translator(s). Here one can find who the translator is and how to contact him/her.
Also, translators deserve the right to sign their work.

You could simple add in English *.lng file with next TC version something like this:

English
codepage=1252
Total Commander 10.00
Updated: 29 September 2021
Translator(s): Christian Ghisler

and in next difres just put a simple explanation.

What do you think?

I agree that more info could be nice.

But I think the language names should be switched:
<LANGUAGE ENGLISH NAME> (<LANGUAGE NATIVE NAME AND SCRIPT>)
Otherwise the sorting of the list in the Configuration can become very random.

And I suggest:
TC-version: 10.0
License #524 (1994)
Danish Total Commander Translator
TC 11.03 32+64bit on Win XP 32bit & Win 7, 8.1 & 10 (22H2) 64bit, 'Everything' 1.5.0.1371a
TC 3.50b4 on Android 6 & 13

I also prefer

Serbian, cyrillic (Српски, ћирилица)
Serbian, latin (Srpski, latinica)

over

Srpski, latinica (Serbian, latin) - under letter S
Српски, ћирилица (Serbian, cyrillic) - somewhere in the end

"Total Commander 10.00" looks better to me.
That's the official software name. For those who open the file without knowing what it is.
For those who know and just want to see the version, here:

codepage=1252
Total Commander 10.00
Updated: 29 September 2021

it is a bit more visible than here:

codepage=1252
TC-version: 10.0
Updated: 29 September 2021

It is clear what the numbers mean without word "version".

I support this request. I am just looking for contact on translator because of some bugs in translation and I can not find such information. I have tried look in lng file, but there is nothing too. But also info about version, date, codepage would be good to be there in the begining of lng file. But also in Help>>About window could be information about translator.

because of some bugs in translation and I can not find such information
Open the English Help file -> 5. Credits -> a. Translation etc.

You can also see the translators of the non-standard languages on: https://www.ghisler.com/languages.htm

But also in Help>>About window could be information about translator.
It already is - if the translator provided it. Currently "About Total Commander" shows the translator for: Danish, Spanish, Hungarian, Dutch, Norwegian, Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Afrikaans, Albanian, Bulgarian, Catalan, Estonian, Greek, Kölsh, Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Thai and Ukranian.

codepage would be good to be there in the begining of lng file
It already is, if the codepage is not 1252.

You can add comments to the .lng file between curly { } brackets, so the translators could add: translator, version and date if they wanted to.

Out of the 50 languages in my language pack I can only find contact email for 8 translators.

Belarusian
Croatian
Bulgarian
Hebrew
Japanese
Russian
Ukranian
Uzbek

The Belarussian and Croatian has contact email in the .lng file. The rest has the contact info in readme files in the language pack which you can download at https://www.ghisler.com/languages.htm

You can also contact me and I will forward suggestions to the translators, and ask them whether they want to be contacted directly.
