A problem with TotalcmdWiki

Post by *gerald_leaf »

2Stefan2

Hello and pardon me for intruding on your Sunday but I wasn't sure who to address this message to and how to address a problem I encountered in: "Useful 3rd party tools to complement TC". The problem I came across was a bad entry or a hijacked entry and I have no idea how to correct it. The jv16 PowerTools entry shows what I presume to be the United Arab Emirate soccer team and I know the correct link would be https://jv16powertools.com/. I need some more experience with this forum and some education before jumping in to edit TotalcmdWiki.

Thank you for your time.

Thanks for reporting that.

You may edit that yourself:
- login with your forum login
- go to https://www.ghisler.ch/wiki/index.php?title=Useful_3rd_party_tools_to_complement_TC
- click at [Edit] . . . . . ([View Source] if not logged in)
- search for powertools
- look out for what looks like a URL
[http://www.jv16.org/ jv16 PowerTools] - System cleaning and error fixing utility suite. [http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=26622#26622]
and correct it to https://jv16powertools.com/

click at [Save]

Done now.

I don't know if that org-URL pointed sometime to the right page?
My last notes are from 2009 and there it point to www.macecraft.com :D
And in [View History] there is no modify entry for powertools

Thank you for correcting the problem with the link. Also, thank you for explaining how I may edit the TotalcmdWiki for when I encounter a problem. If I should find a "404", do I use the same procedure that you outlined or report it as another problem?

Thank you for your time and explanation.

I know I have found another problem!!! "Access Folders - Windows file save/open dialog enhancement to quickly access your favorite folders." It links to a Japanese pornography site and don't have a URL for "Access Folders". Domain names are changing all the time and the link for "Access Folders" may have been correct at one. I don't want to delete the entry for "Access Folders" because I think it can be corrected, I just don't have the proper information.

On another matter, if I would like to see an entry for Rufus: "Rufus is a utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc.", it has to be discussed in the forum before entering a link?

Again, thank you for your time.

If a link results in "404" there is nothing we can do. If it's the correct URL, then it is as it is.
Me think, nobody expects you to find and modify with the correct or an alternative link.
Direct links are nice to have, but user can also google there-self to find the app in question.
But if you want to volunteer nobody prevents you from yourself to do so. (me think it would be rather highly welcome)

If a link points to the wrong page then just delete the link completely (or use a link to this very page here where we can discuss it)

If you want to add a nifty tool then just go ahead and add it, there is no committee to judge about.

But I wasn't a member in the time the wiki was introduced,.... so, what do others think?

Sometimes domains expire, e.g. because someone loses interest or passes away. Then someone else can grab the domain and put there whatever they want. So if you spot such a link, please fix it or remove it. Thanks!

Removing a problem domain address will have to be done in a manner that will not disrupt the conversational links in the forum.

Removal of the URL with a notice that "the domain no longer exists" and / or "the file(s) are at an unknown location"...

Reviewing "Useful 3rd party tools to complement TC", I have some concerns about "404 error" (approximately 22 issues, so far) and if I should treat them in the same manner as problem domains or issue a statement for users to conduct their own search?

Also, there are a number of "Discontinued!" items, (approximately 23 issues, so far) where some are "404", some are located at TOTALCMD.NET and some are located in the Addons, Tools and Plugins of the Total Commander home page.

How am I to maintain the "Useful 3rd party tools to complement TC" database in alphabetical order? Does saving and closing the file automatically perform an alphabetical sort?
