Total Commander 3.30 beta 1 for Android available

Post by *ghisler(Author) »

Total Commander 3.30 beta 1 for Android is available now!

This is a rather important update for users of Android 11 or newer, because it switches to a new permission MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE for accessing the file system. This permission is restricted by Google to file managers, backup tools and similar apps. Total Commander just got approved in the Play Store to use this permission. It makes access to external SD cards much faster.

You can get the beta version from the Play Store or via direct download here:
https://www.ghisler.com/android.htm#download

List of most important changes:
  • Use new Android permission MANAGE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE on Android 11 and newer to get full file system access reserved for file managers
  • New 2 panel mode where both panels have the same width - use inverted colors for path to indicate active panel
  • Support Microsoft Surface Duo/Duo 2 to show one file panel on each screen
  • Media player: Load track start positions and names from .cue file with same name as audio file (only one audio file per .cue file supported)
  • Find files: Search for file names using regular expressions
  • Bugfixes

This mode is good for tablets, but colors aren't exactly inverted.
In bright mode:
- inactive path is dark gray on white
- active path is white on black (white on dark gray or graphite expected)
In dark mode:
- inactive path is bright gray on graphite
- active path is black on white (black on bright gray expected)

I can live with black bar in bright mode, but white bar in dark mode is unacceptable.

Thank you!
And is it possible to add path tabs to the panels (like in Windows version)?

Thanks for the update.

Behaviour on Samsung S20FE did not much change appart from visibility of folders.
Build-Nummer : G780GXXU3AUJ2, Android 11 R, Veröffentlichungsdatum : 2021-11-24

External SDcard:
- ok, this is new, android data subfolders folders are now visible on SDcard
( /storage/110E-CBF/Android/data/ )
- but still no access to the subfolders, only tcmd folder is accessible (obviously).

Internal Memory:
- when I open "/storage/emulated/0Android/data", then use "installed apps",
folders on internal memory "///_Android_data" are visible and accessible.

Is there a specific routine to follow to get full access?
I passed the usuall allow access questions.

Installations used for this make no difference (manually using
universal installer, and remove, then install from Google beta).

In dark mode:

I cannot reproduce that. Did you set custom colors in main menu - Configure - Font and Colors? Then TC will use these also for the header, just text and background reversed. If not, the background color is hard coded to 0xF2F2F2 (red, green and blue all set to 242 decimal), which would be light gray, and the same value as getResources().getColor(R.color.whitegrey).

What default color would you suggest?
You can choose it via main menu - Configure - Font and Colors - Foreground (yes, this will be used as the background of the active title bar).
And is it possible to add path tabs to the panels
Currently not, it would take a lot of screen space.
External SDcard:
- ok, this is new, android data subfolders folders are now visible on SDcard
( /storage/110E-CBF/Android/data/ )
They don't appear here on my Galaxy S10e with Android 11. However, the patch date here is November 1, while you already seem to have the December update.

Currently you can't get full access to Android/data on the SD card, sorry.

Try to deny access to storage in APP mangement, then allow it again when you try to access SDcard.

Question: in long term, are you planing to get access in Tcmd to Android/data on the SD card?

Thanks for your efforts so far!

Well, I will describe it another way:
In dark mode:
* Inactive path bar uses the same colors as the file list.
* Active path bar uses reversed colors of the header. For me there should be reversed colors of the file list. It would be good also for bright mode.

I never changed default colors.

If space is the only problem, you can add just a dropdown icon with tabs list (and Add/Remove of corse).

Installed the beta last night (v3.30b1). Everything seems to work fine with the exception of editing TXT files with the internal editor.

If I try to edit one, TC crashes. If I try to create a, new TXT file, TC will create a zero-byte file with the correct name, but as soon as I select TC as the editor, it will crash. When I reopen TC, the zero-byte file is there.

Running Android 11.

I've tried deleting the app's cache, țhe system cache, reinstalling TC, I've reset permissions on the app. Nothing helps.

It's a feature I use a lot because I work with TXT files many times a day. I've resorted to installing an external editor so I can still edit them.

Thank you for trying.

Thanks for your report. It happens when word wrap is enabled. I will release a new beta later today. Sorry for the troubles.

???
The foreground and background of the file list are exactly the same as the foreground and background of the inactive header. The active header in 50%:50% mode uses these same colors, just reversed. This is true both for dark mode and bright mode, both with default colors and with user-chosen colors!

Anyway, I will use a slightly darker gray (C3C3C3, that's the one Windows uses) as default title background in dark mode.

Interesting. I don't suppose it's as easy a fix as in the Windows version with an INI file that I could edit?

In any event, I'll watch for the update, and I appreciate the excellent support. I've been using TC since it was WC, back in the 90s. It's the first application I install on a, fresh OS. Can't live without it :-)

Thanks again!

Beta 2 is live in the play store now, and you can also download it from our homepage. The update via play store should be installed automatically.
