Dynamic Text Settings for Title Line in Total Commander

Post by *jinsight »

As discussed in the Total Commander (English) forum
https://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=76307
Saved Tabs TC Application Title

You can use the TitleExtraText parameter in wincmd.ini file to set the contents of the title line as found in Help:
TitleExtraText= Show extra text in the title bar:
*text in front of the title,
-text same but without instance number (multiple programs running)
$text behind the title

As suggested by nsp:

The TitleExtraText is unique by configuration file and static. It would be good is to have:

1. a command line parameter to change it when launching TC and
2. a cm_TitleText with parameter to change it on the fly

Since I find the expansion of environment variables in the title very helpful (e.g. for displaying some system information), I would also appreciate something like cm_RefreshTitle.

I'd like to revisit this topic and go into a little more detail about the potential usefulness of a title bar that can be changed at runtime.

---

For many of us, TC is probably an elementary control center that permanently facilitates our everyday work. For me, TC starts with Windows and replaces virtually all Windows functions for file and application management.

While TC is perfect for managing files and other "things", it would also be great if there was a GUI area that would *permanently* display very general information -- e.g. various system information. [Maybe I'll make a proposal for this as a separate thread sometime.] As long as this area doesn't exist, I use the title bar to display such information. In my case, this is easy because (1) TC supports environment variables in TitleExtraText, (2) I have such variables anyway, and (3) I don't want to display too many of them all the time.

Unfortunately, the contents of these variables change frequently, so I have to restart TC every now and then to see the current value.

Without a doubt, this is a "misuse" of the title bar. And although I'm really not a fan of messy workaraunds: It's just super handy to have some general information *permanently* in view.

Therefore: cm_TitleText or cm_RefreshTitle as previously suggested would be just great for now.

---

Two questions:
@author: How do you see this?
@all: If you need something like that at all: How do you display general information in TC? Is there any interest in such a possibility in the GUI?
