[TC 10.50B1] TC Options [Interface]

Post by *Pawel »

Christian,
Thank you for you work on TC!

I would like to write about minor thing.
Maybe it is good idea to make Total Commander Options window a bit larger, to fit all controls? Now, everything seems to be so "squeezed".

Control are very close to each other. GroupBox lines sometimes are so close to other. Sometimes, the lines are overlapped by controls.
This is not only TC Options Window issue. Also other TC Dialogs has that "issue". Everything so small and close to each other. I am sure you know what I mean. Here is an example: https://www.dropbox.com/s/1xexyu85rb7sqdo/TC_Options.png?dl=0

Today, most of us work on big screen (> 22") with higher resolution (or even 4K). Why not make it a bit bigger (I am not talking about DPI or font size - I am talking about UI design)?
How do you think?

I think it's because Christian wants to make sure TC is usable on screens with a small resolution as well (I think 800*600?), but I support making the configuration dialog larger, too. If we absolutely want to keep backwards compatibility, maybe check the resolution, and show old dialog for lower resolutions (say below 1366*768) and a newer larger redesigned one for resolutions equal or higher than 1366*768. Would make for a lot of duplicate work, though.

Or we can resort to some 3rd party tool for TC settings.

Indeed it needs to be small enough to work on 800x600 with 120dpi, e.g. for safe mode without display driver.

The dialog is already zoomed up by 10% when there is enough screen space.

Hmm, I understand - it might be a problem to make happy everyone...
However, who use 800x600 screen nowaydays? I mean how many people.... I am sure, most users not.
So, maybe it is better to think about interface for smaller screen/resolution and other, for modern computers (yes, I know, it might be a problem to maintain this)...

For sure, it looks "old" and "squeezed" now... but in the end, it's about productivity, not looks.
I'm curious what other users think...

In response to "I'm curious what other users think..."

If we are talking about settings for Total Commander, I would rather see energy spent on seeing All settings in a Single place With descriptions. The now orphaned ultra_tc_editors is an example of one sort of effort in this direction.

It happens with some Windows version when there is no dedicated display driver, e.g. when using VirtualBox without installing the guest extensions.

But it's NOT 120 dpi by default.

"it's not about looks". I hear this a lot, but the truth is, that it is a real pain to find your way through the settings. I have been using TC for quite some time now, but I don't visit the settings page very often because most of the time TC, "just works".

However, currently I am looking for a replacement for plugin synWrite because it crashes too often. I am looking into CudaLister but configuring it properly is a real struggle; not only are instructions for CL not very clear, but there are so many places in TC settings that affect plugin workings that it's not fun to do.

So, yes, in the end functionality is important, because if it doesn't work, no one bothers if it looks good, but if it looks good, it is more inviting to use.

It's a chicken and egg, and balance problem. If it doesn't work well or is difficult to use, few will use it; if it looks unappealing, fewer are likely to try it. It's a matter of the balance between functionality and appeal. Different people strike that balance differently.

TC leans to the functionality side of the balance.

Doesn't it use the dpi of the host screen?

Well, I haven't seen any virtual machine which provides less than 4 MB video memory - it allows to use 24 bit color on 1280x1024 screen size. You can see 800x600 screen size only when running Windows 9x in safe mode.
I haven't tested different DPI for host screen.

Maybe it is better to make Configuration a resizable window instead of a fixed size dialog. If that is not
feasible, make it a scrollable dialog like the Preferences dialog of Adobe Acrobat Reader so that you have
more room to lay out the widgets.
