Release the Linux version of Total Commander

Post by *Andy Solo »

Release the Linux version of Total Commander. Free Pascal and Lazarus allow you to do this. For example, your competitor Double Commander is written in Lazarus 2.2.0.4 and FPC 3.2.2.

Mal angenommen, du drückst Strg+F, wählst die FTP-Verbindung (mit gespeichertem Passwort), klickst aber nicht auf Verbinden, sondern fällst tot um.

I have tried this many years ago, but got strange crashes in threads which I could not resolve.

There would not be a big benefit anyway because a big part of Total Commander comes from plugins. These are DLLs and couldn't be used from a Linux program.

Midnight Commander (mc) is a reasonable alternative on Linux (for me).

So he's a console. MC is like FAR Manager.

The best Linux alternative to Total Commander is Double Commander - which also has a Windows edition.

I would certainly use a Linux version of TC even without any plugins at all. And i would also reregister it for linux too.

I have been using TC for many years and it's stability is incredible. I am also using krusader, double commander and midnight commander, but all of them are inferior to TC (even without any plugins). Neither Krusader not double commander is a match for TC. So I usually have to install them both.

For example quickview in double commander crashes occasionally for no reason. Krusader's quickview is badly designed. Krusader's performance is not that good too and it is also a KDE app so many functionalities are limited if you are not using KDE. Additionally support of network drives in both programs is very buggy especially in Krusader where F3 or F4 sometimes fails when the file is on a mapped windows network drive (it is not smart enough to make a local copy when needed or it simple fails somehow).

TC in windows is a beast. I have rarely experienced any crash. I use it a lot with network drives flawlessly, Its performance is awesome even in old computers, it is not bloated at all. For me a stable version of TC for linux would be a small miracle! :)

You can use the windows based TC on Linux with PlayonLinux, and it works perfectly like on Windows. First install playonlinux:
sudo apt install playonlinux
Then run the playonlinux and install the Windows based TCsetup.exe.
Done.

What about muCommander? It's very nice in my opinion.

I really like total commander and even bought a license and I use it solely without any plugins.
I too would love if you could get it work. Maybe things got a little bit better over the years.

I agree. It is very similar, and its existence makes a native non-Windows version of the Windows Total Commander pointless in my opinion.
