Questions about TC 10 and TC 10.5 installation

Post by *misvin »

Environment 1: Windows 11 (64-bit); TC (64-bit)
Environment 2: Windows 10 (32-bit); TC (32-bit)

For both environments:
Installation folder: C:\Program Files\Total Commander\
All configuration files (*.ini, *.bar) are in that installation folder.
Plugins folder: C:\Program Files\Total Commander\Plugins\

Questions:
1. What needs to be done before TC setup, incl. create empty folders, define proper folder permissions, create/configure *.ini, *.bar and other files?

2. When I run TC installer, which option should I choose to get all the configuration files in the folder C:\Program Files\Total Commander\?
I remember that new TC versions don't allow you to select some options for the location of *.ini files.

3. What additional steps will be required after completing TC setup? For example, change permissions of some folders and/or files (incl. wincmd.ini).

Thanks

If you don't know much about how your OS works, you may just run the setup and let the installer do the rest.

Also you can just unpack the download package for example to C:\myTC\
and additionally create a text file wincmd.ini in that folder,
and before first run add the following to it:
[Configuration]
UseIniInProgramDir=7

Now you have all together in one folder.

For more ask, search the forum
or see >> viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52425
and there "Total Commander is fully portable"
or "Tips & Tricks for new user"

Stefan2, thank you.

I'm trying to do a portable (without to store settings and information in the registry) install of TC (64-bit) on Windows 11, as per your advice.
Installation folder: C:\Program Files\Total Commander\
I only use English in the TC help and interface.

My questions:

1. When I extract files from the tcmd1000x64.exe file, there are the following files:
INSTALL.CAB
FILE_ID.DIZ
INSTALL.INF
INSTALL.LNG
LIESMICH.TXT
README.TXT
TotalCommander.URL

Do I need to copy some of these files to C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ or should I only copy files from the INSTALL.CAB archive?

2. When I extract files from the INSTALL.CAB archive, I get the following folders and files:
d\
e\
FILTER64\
LANGUAGE\

DEFAULT.BAR
NO.BAR
VERTICAL.BAR
TC7Z64.DLL
TCLZMA64.DLL
TCshareWin10x64.dll
TCUNZL64.DLL
UNRAR64.DLL
WCMICON2.DLL
WCMICONS.DLL
WCMZIP64.DLL
NOCLOSE64.EXE
TCMADM64.EXE
TCMDX32.EXE
TCUNIN64.EXE
TcUsbRun.exe
TOTALCMD64.EXE
TOTALCMD.INC
WCMICONS.INC
DESCRIPT.ION
TOTALCMD64.EXE.MANIFEST
SFXHEAD.SFX
CGLPT64.SYS
HISTORY.TXT
SIZE!.TXT
TCUNIN64.WUL
TCUNINST.WUL
WCUNINST.WUL

Are the following phrases correct?

2.1. Since I only use English, I don't need to copy files from the d\ folder.
2.2. I copy all the files from the e\ folder to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder.
2.3. I copy the FILTER64\ folder with all the files to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\FILTER64\ folder.
2.4. From the LANGUAGE\ folder, I copy only one file (WCMD_ENG.MNU) to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\LANGUAGE\ folder.

2.5. Should I copy all the other files from the list above (from DEFAULT.BAR to WCUNINST.WUL) to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder?

3. My local Windows 11 user is a member of the Administrators group.
Should I give myself Full Control permissions on the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder?

When I apply the Full Control permissions, which option do I choose (see Advanced Security Settings):
a) This folder only
b) This folder, subfolders and files
c) This folder and subfolders
d) This folder and files
e) Subfolders and files only
f) Subfolders only
g) Files only

4. What about permissions on the wincmd.ini and other configuration files?

You will only need the files from INSTALL.CAB
You can also run the setup, copy the created folder to where you want, and uninstall again.
You can also extract the setup and the cab with f.ex. 7zip or an older running TC.

2. When I extract files from the INSTALL.CAB archive, I get the following folders and files:

Are the following phrases correct?

2.1. Since I only use English, I don't need to copy files from the d\ folder.

That is right.

2.2. I copy all the files from the e\ folder to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder.
2.3. I copy the FILTER64\ folder with all the files to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\FILTER64\ folder.

Copy the whole folders as they are, as seen in the INSTALL.CAB
If you don't need the German language, you don't need the "D" Deutsch folder.
If you don't use 32-bit TC, me think you do not need the 32-bit Filters.

2.4. From the LANGUAGE\ folder, I copy only one file (WCMD_ENG.MNU)
to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\LANGUAGE\ folder.
Yes.

2.5. Should I copy all the other files from the list above (from DEFAULT.BAR to WCUNINST.WUL)
to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder?
Yes.
Usually I just take the whole folder from the INSTALL.CAB and afterwards I remove all unwanted files.
The files from the main folder (BAR to WUL) are mostly all need.
You can read the text file "descript.ion" with F3 or F4 to get more info about.

3. My local Windows 11 user is a member of the Administrators group.
Should I give myself Full Control permissions on the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder?
Not need, admins have write access anyway.
And so have malware.
It's advisable to not work as admin and only grant the group users modify write access to some folders.

When I apply the Full Control permissions, which option do I choose (see Advanced Security Settings):
a) This folder only
b) This folder, subfolders and files
c) This folder and subfolders
d) This folder and files
e) Subfolders and files only
f) Subfolders only
g) Files only
Just (a) from the first dialog.
No need for "Advanced Security Settings" page.
On normal OS-settings, the rights are inherited downwards.
And you would grant only Modify rights, that's all a user would need,
.... FullAccess can additionally change some more administrative settings, like OwnerShip.
That differentiation is only relevant if more people use the same PC, mostly in an company.

4. What about permissions on the wincmd.ini and other configuration files?
The ini is anyway in a folder where the user has write access.
But you can also move both ini's into the program folder
and add that line "UseIniInProgramDir" to it:
[Configuration]
UseIniInProgramDir=7

so TC use that ini from the TC program folder and you have all together, ready to copy or backup.
But that way you will need write rights to that folder, so be sure to have or to grant permissions as shown above.

We have such info already, as posted in my last post, collected at viewtopic.php?f=3&t=52425
There you can find hints like "Be sure to use from now on always %Commander_Path% to point to your TC home folder."

Yes.

You can read the text file "descript.ion" with F3 or F4 to get more info about.
I have found that the following files can be removed from TC's portable install:
SIZE!.TXT
TCUNIN64.EXE
TCUNIN64.WUL
TCUNINST.WUL
WCUNINST.WUL
The ini is anyway in a folder where the user has write access.
I never run TC as administrator.
In order to save changes (such as tab names) to the wincmd.ini file, I needed to grant my local Windows 11 user write permission to the wincmd.ini file in the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder.

Please note that I did not change anything in the access rights to the C:\Program Files\Total Commander\ folder itself.

If you are only using English, you don't need this file.
