Total commander blocking folder deletion

Post by *Bazzu85 »

Hi, trying Total Commander 10 (from 8.51).

Happens often that when I want to delete a folder explorer say's that's in use (tried from explorer and TC). Closing TC free the resource.
The folder is not opened in any other tab.
Is this a known issue? ty

Bazzu85,
Are you perhaps using QuickSearch eXtended?

A folder which is the current directory in any program cannot be deleted. If it's displayed in Total Commander in one of the panels, it may be the current directory of Total Commander. Try going to a different folder first.

No, it' not that. It bugs me for some time (years). I still cannot figure out a pattern, but I think also Everything has something to do with it. And yes, I'm using also QuickSearch eXtended. Should I drop it?

I never had problems to delete Folders
while I'm using Everything and QuickSearch eXtended all the time.
May be you had QuickView opened before in the folder to delete.
Windows 11 Home x64 Version 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3374)
TC 11.03 x64 / x86
Everything 1.5.0.1371a (x64), Everything Toolbar 1.3.2, Listary Pro 6.3.0.69

I mean that closing TC many times helps, but some times don't help, only closing Everything from the tray unlock the folder for deletion. I'm rarely using QuickView.

massor,
yes, I'm using also QuickSearch eXtended
It sometimes keeps a folder locked. No idea why, have not really trobleshooted it. If you're willing to, you have my encouragement.

Total Commander doesn't normally keep a handle to a folder, except in one situation: When using the option "Auto-refresh when the file system changes" in Configuration - Options - Refresh. It only keeps a handle of the two active folders left and right.

It's also possible that something else keeps a file or folder handle open due to a bug, e.g. a plugin or Explorer extension. I'm not aware of any tool which can determine which part of a program had opened the handle.

I also know the problem since a long time (years). I doesn't happen often but every now and then (hard to quantify).
Whenever it happens it's of course annoying but I simply restart TC and that's it.

Next time I will try to investigate it a bit more...

I have had this happen to me also. I found a small, portable, free program named LockHunter. It finds the programs locking a directory/file. It used a context menu item. It supports 32/64 bit windows xp and later. It can be found here: https://lockhunter.com/.

@joe910 - Great, thanks! I will use this tool. At least a chance to find out who is to blame.

I'm using it too, it's really nice. You can even unlock files/folders with it.

May be you can use Process Monitor for details.
E.g. for file setup.exe opened in Lister you can see these details

Here someone had the same problem, and it was caused by crashpad_handler.exe from Google Drive desktop:

I think this is largely due to wdx plugins that read data within their tree for coloring and hints.
There is also a specific problem of lingering deletion of exe files by Shift+Del when the AeLookupSvc service is disabled. In this case, neither LockHunter nor other analogues (IObit Unlocker, Empty Loop Unlocker etc) will help you.
