Search function: how to use to find what I want?

Post by *Sedaray »

I am a musician with a terrible memory for lyrics: I have about a thousand .doc, .docx, .pdf, and .rtf files with lyrics and chords.
I am grateful that TC has two columns, one I can arrange alphabetically, the other by chronology so I can find recent work.
I’m using a large Luna (VCT9T48Q34) tablet with Android 10.

I’m having trouble with the search function. example:

Filename “I Just Called To Say I Love You Stevie Wonder”. I am looking at the file in the other column, not in a subfolder. It exists and is spelled correctly, no filters checked. I don’t use caps in my search string.

Searches:
i just called - I get a subfolder with a few misc files, NONE of which have ANY of these words in the titles. And not my file.
i just called * - same results.
* i just called - same results
*i just called - same results
* I just - more results with “just” but not my file.
* just called - no results
* just called to - results with ANY of the three words, NOT ALL of the three - and not my file!!!
I just * - files with “just” in the name but not “I” - and NOT my file
I just - all results have “just” in the title - but not the word “I” - AND NOT MY FILE!!!
* say love - lots of files with “love” in the title, but none with “say”

* called - success - and others with “called” in the title
* just - success - and a couple hundred others, of course.

I can include screenshots but I think this is clear. I don’t understand the rules! Please suggest!!!

If I search in the text, since my file was at root of the search folder it came up first. But it takes too long to complete if the desired file is in a subfolder, or if the word is not the first word in the filename.

ps I used to put an underscore before a name I was prioritizing, but search ignores the first letter after the underscore so now I put underscore space: _ foo.docx

The problem here is that your search strings contain spaces. Total Commander will look for the individual parts, which is meant to be used with wildcards like this:
*.doc *.docx *.txt
To find a text with spaces in the middle of a file name, you would have to write it like this:
"*some text with spaced*"
including the quotes and asterisks.

Btw, I'm currently working on a new version where I will search for this automatically when the user just enters
some text with spaced
in addition to how it searches now.

Using an Eveything search with the ev: or ed: prefix works
regardless of the spaces and need no "" around.
