How get Total Commander for an old GPS ?

Post by *CaptnBacon »

Hi,
According to

https://hackaday.com/2019/09/01/running-doom-on-a-doomed-gps/#more-374273

and

https://ripitapart.com/2019/08/30/hacking-into-windows-ce-and-doom-on-the-magellan-roadmate-1412-gps-receiver/

it seems to be possible to "hack" some of these old Magellan GPS by installing TotalCommander instead of the Navigator app. I tried to however my model is not exactly the same (RoadMate 1470). It simply stays on the loading screen when I swap the executable. I plugged the GPS into a Linux Desktop and I saw that the executables on the GPS were "ARM thumb" but TC was simply "ARM" :

000cecmd - Pocket.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM, for MS Windows
000cecmd - WinCE.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM, for MS Windows
MassStorageFix.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
mgnQCS.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
mgnShell.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
Navigator.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM, for MS Windows
Navigator_BCK.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
OneTouch.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
VIDEO.EXE: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows

Any idea where I can get a "ARM Thumb" version of TC or any idea on what to do from here?

You will probably need the version for Windows CE, not the one for PocketPC:

Hi,
downloaded the cab and extracted it. Copied and renamed 000cecmd.002 as "000cecmd - WinCE2.exe" and Navigator.exe for the hack. Didn't work. The GPS Unit is stuck on boot. As

000cecmd - Pocket.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM, for MS Windows
000cecmd - WinCE.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM, for MS Windows
000cecmd - WinCE2.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM, for MS Windows
MassStorageFix.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
mgnQCS.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
mgnShell.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
Navigator.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
Navigator_BCK.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
OneTouch.exe: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows
VIDEO.EXE: PE32 executable (Windows CE) ARM Thumb, for MS Windows

As you can see all the other executables are "ARM Thumb". Not sure if that's the reason it doesn't work but it seems to be a possibility.

I'm trying to sort out the same thing- cab files are unfamiliar to me, it feels strange to just rename all the file extensions to .exes... seems sort of similar to how winrar will sometimes compress large files into a bunch of .r0, .r1, .r2 (etc) files. It's tricky trying to research this seeing as all the material on it is quite old now, with the exception of the one post you linked.
