Some personal suggestion for Total CMD!

Post by *zhxeeaa »

I have been using and inseparable since I founded Total Commander. Thanks to Ghisler's unremitting improvement, and to add new features to it from time to time. Some large changes will surprise us, such as the dark mode from 9.0 to 10.0.
In addition, I have some ideas and suggestions, I hope to achieve the future update of Total Commander.

1. Advanced label function:
The number and type of files collected on the disk are increasing every day, I Hope I can make various colored labels and add to any file or folder, and can filter the files or folders in the window by selecting the label on Total CMD (I've never used the vertical toolbar, if it had a tab function it could be made into a vertical "label bar"), if there can hover over the file or folder to tip The added color label will be very Wonderful;

2. More convenient, high efficiency like QTTabbar:
A long time ago, QTTabbar implemented some great functions for the windows explorer, such as previewing the files no need entering the folder. Now there are many lightweight file managers, such as Tablacus Explorer, etc., I hope to use similar functions on TOTAL CMD too;

3.Could use other applications as a plugin:
The plugin function of Total Commander used to be very useful. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer authors who are developing plugins and continue to update them. The hardware of modern computers has been greatly developed, and many independent programs can be opened quickly and the interface is excellent. and the functions are more richer, such as listers: Wiztree, IrfanView, XnView, MPV... I personally think that Total Commander can try to make these exe programs compatible as plugins, without the need to install video、audio and image filters and decoders for "Built-in Lister", let this "expert" do "professional things", just configure files type association to them, send path and parameter to Specified programs. Total Commander no need to become more bloated and I believe more users would rather use a portable MPV program than install another set of filters and codecs on the system.
For example, when I press F3, in the default situation use Wiztree to view the directory, IrfanView to view the picture, MPV to open the video, Foobar2k to play the audio, NotePad3 to open TXT, JSON, Conf, ini ...In this way, users no longer needs to worry about the problem of no "wanted" plugin and the "expiration" of the plugin for Total CMD.
When I want to view a image file quickly, press F3: irfanview will open it; if I want to edit it simply, double -click: XnviewMP will open it; if I need modify it complicated, press F4: PhotoShop will open it...I also have similar needs for other multimedia files.
:D

Your topic subject is not very useful. May I suggest another one? How about:
RamDisk support, add labels to files/folder, add functions like QTTabbar, use functionality of other programs.

For example, when using the built-in unzip, it will pop up a prompt of "not enough memory"
How much free space does Total Commander display for the RAM disk in the header? If the RAM disk grows dynamically, it may be showing 0 bytes free because it only grows when you actually add files.

Other aspects are normal, showing occupation, free space, reading and writing, etc., including moving Total CMD's Thumbnail Cache on it, can create TCTHUMBS.IDB and TCTHUMBS.DB normally.
But when I want to drag and drop the files in ZIP, it will report the " Not enough memory ".
In addition, I am Windows 10 21H2, and I move the system and user TEMP directory to Ramdisk.

just tested
Drag and drop files from the compressed package, *.rar and *.7z can be used, but *.zip will not work, pop a " UNZIP " box " Not enough memory " ( maybe is " out of memory ", because I use other languages )

Is there a demo version of the ram disk you use? I need to check this in a debugger, I don't know what else could be wrong.

Yes, there is romexsoftware primo ramdisk official website:
Primo Ramdisk Server v6.6.0 is second one
https://www.romexsoftware.com/en-us/primo-ramdisk/download.html

I am using the server version below, but still 6.5.0.
I migrate pagefile.sys and system、user "temp" to RamDisk.

I have installed primo ramdisk demo now, although the professional version, not the server version, since I do not use Windows Server.

I have then created a RAM disk with default settings: NTFS, 8 GB. I do not have any problems unpacking files from ZIP to it.
This is on Windows 11 pro x64.

Thanks for test, did you migrate pagefile.sys and system、user "temp" to RamDisk before test?
I think my problem is the same as his, it is caused by migrating the default temp to RamDisk.
https://www.ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=415083&hilit=ramdisk+zip#p415083

It may also be my system got problems or I should be installed the professional version instead of the server version.
When I run "CD %TEMP%" in the command line of Total CMD can locate the TEMP directory of RamDisk correctly.

I will certainly NOT move pagefile.sys to a RAM disk, this completely defeats the purpose of a page file.

For test purposes, I have changed TEMP and TMP variables to z:\temp, with z: the RAM disk. This works fine both for viewing files from ZIP with F3 (which uses the TEMP folder on the RAM disk), and for unpacking with F5 to drive Z: (which does not use the TEMP folder).

Does your pagefile.sys grow extremely when unpacking? It makes no sense, because ZIP uses significantly less memory to unpack than RAR or 7z.

The problem is solved!
I double checked the settings and found that I only checked "Treat archives like directories" and not "Always use internal unzipping"...
I'm so sorry for making such stupid mistake! Thanks so much for your patience and testing!

zhxeeaa,
I migrate pagefile.sys [...] to RamDisk.
Why don't you simply disable virtual memory?
