Find duplicates with selection in both panes

TC 10.00

I suspect that if I make selections in both panes, the "Find duplicates" runs only one of the two.
Comments welcome.

mmm wrote: 2023-01-11, 13:39 UTC Thanks.

My gut feeling is telling me this forum gets a tad more views than the bug list.
For that reason I suggest we wait for a week or two to see contributions from others if there is any.
Then, you can move the problem to the right destination.

Deal?

That's correct.

You can make the Find duplicates searh both panels if you manually add the path of the opposite panel to the "Search in" field, separated with a semicolon.

I translate your response as "Yes, it is a bug".

No, I don't consider it as a bug, hardly even as a missing feature - and I did not percieve your post as a bug report since it was no in the TC10.x bug reports (English) section.

Find files has always only worked for one panel, but can work for several non related folders or several drives, as pointed out.

Petermad,
Thanks for your prompt reply, as always.
I wanted to test the audience before reporting the problem as a bug.

Anyway, there is more to it.
You can make the Find duplicates search both panels if you manually add the path of the opposite panel to the "Search in" field, separated with a semicolon.
I am afraid that the statement above is true for non-selection search only.

Steps to follow:
1. Make selections on both sides
2. Uncheck the "Only search in selected directories" tick
3. Add the two paths manually as you suggested
4. Tick the "Only search in selected directories" option again

Let me know what you think.

Yes.
4. Tick the "Only search in selected directories" option again
Ticking that option, resets the "Search in" field to the path in the active panel. So it is not possible with the current implementation to search only selected files/folders in more that one panel.

TC's search has always prefilled the directory of the active panel, and worked on that. This still applies when a selection is made, as TC's help points out:
Only search in selected directories/files

Only search in directories and files selected in Total Commander's active file window.
Hence, the "Find duplicates" option works on objects selected in the active panel.

If you want something else, you might want to suggest a new feature. Or voice your support for this suggestion: viewtopic.php?t=78185, which sound very similar to what you're trying to do.

Dalai

Dalai,
I do not think that the link you provided deals with selection.
Close, but not identical.
Thanks anyway.

mmm,
Well, if it matters in any way, this is by design. You are welcome to propose a change / improvement / feature request.

That doesn't matter. If the search doesn't work on both panels it can't work on selections made in both panels. Put another way: searching in both panels is the prerequisite for searching within the selection of both panels.

[EDIT]
Slightly rephrased for clarity (hopefully ;))

Hacker,
Thanks for your feedback.

Dalai,
Not sure where you are going with that.
No biggie though.

In this regard it may be of interest to the participants in the above discussion that while I do not consider the current implementation to be a bug either I've only recently issued exactly that kind of request for an enhancement in the
"TC suggestions (English)"-section of the board which would appear to be the appropriate location for that purpose - although I would also have to agree that the audience for such an endeavor probably might be much larger here in the main-section.

Addendum: Oh, sorry @Dalai for overlooking that you had already linked to my corresponding feature-request. As for the question about searching selections - well, if you would implement searching below both panels to begin with (being a prerequisite for this as you already correctly pointed out) - and since each file-panel supports selections - this would IMHO automatically imply that duplicates could be searched only between/below selections within these 2 panels as well.
