Lister - very bad UI change for "text not found"

Post by *tcmuppet »

In recent versions of Total Commander, the way Lister works has changed.

When you view a file, and hit F7 to search for a text, you first enter your searched for text, then hit Enter, and it will search for it within the file.
Now, if the text is found, it simply goes to the place where it was found
BUT
if the text is not found, you get a dialog box 'Not Found' with OK and Cancel buttons. If you hit OK button (or hit Enter key), dialog box for search will re-eappear, if you hit Cancel button (or hit Escape key) the messagebox and dialogbix will disappear.

In the past, you would get a message box with 'Not Found' text and just one button: 'OK'

Introduction of the OK/Cancel buttons (moving from message box to dialog box) is very annoying as it contradicts 2 decades of muscle memory developed from using Lister the way described above.

Can the Option be introduced to make it configurable (old way vs. new way)?

Thank you

As workaround use the CudaLister plugin.
Its much better for most text viewing and shows a not found simply in the status bar.

I think I've seen a suggestion to make Lister's search function this way, but I can't find it right now (or I might remember incorrectly). The only thing related is this bug report: viewtopic.php?t=76311

Anyway, if you use ESC key in any case, you'll get the same behavior as before.

I can see the advantage of the new behavior, especially when one needs to look for several strings within the same file. But I agree that there needs to be some option to control this behavior (haven't checked if there is any already).

Yes, for my specific case it won't work well, as it's primarly for doing a lor of forensic/reversing work and working a lot with one-off searches. And I have a muscle memory of hitting ENTER. I try to unlearn it, and use ESC, but it's HARD :)!!!

Agreed, and I use CUDA for some files, but I work a lot with unstructured data + habits are hard to drop.

Really hope option can be introduced. Otherwise may need to go back to v10.00 :(

Thank you my friend, you make me think of old days. I know NDN, Volkov Commander, FAR, DoubleCommander, and many others. I am old. Time to become a farmer.
