Unfortunately using such a tool doesn't really help with the original crash issue.
this moment I did not understand.
With THAT utility I completely forgot about this crash.... I said that I found the system where I could reproduce the problem with probability 100/100! And now - after I started to use this 3rd party tool for loading totalcmd.chm file there(on that computer)- I never meet again this problem!
OF course it will be only my decision to continue use such file - so at least I personally will not even face with such problem)))
and we can't change pages once the help is up (e.g. when you press F1 in one dialog and later in another, it could not open that page in the existing viewer).
This "trick" does not work even and in current version of TC installation - w/o this tool. So I don't really understand - what kind of gain can we talk about here, if even now this option does not work.

The problem with such an external tool for the TC: Nobody knows how long it will be available, how long it will be adapted, how many bugs are in it, how long it takes to fix it, etc. I would therefore think it would be right if something like this were generally avoided within Tc. In other words, I wouldn't think it's ok to use it within Tc. (Anyone can use it for themselves)

If I see it correctly, various people here from the forum initially had a lot of trouble trying to reproduce the error at all. So it doesn't seem like a big deal to me overall. And would put it aside and close it.

Maybe this can be of help: https://www.makeuseof.com/windows-11-22h2-not-installing/

More than a year without updates is a long time

Hm,
so that of course leaves people like me whose main system is susceptible to this problem and cannot use help in a productive way.

Now, I know you all say it is a bug in the windows help system that causes the crash.

But what about all the CHM files I was able to work with that don't produce this crash?!? Only TC's file had this result so far.

What is different in the TC help file that produces the crash while others don't produce the crash?

Would this kind of investigation maybe bring some fruits to this problem?

Maybe we could start by making a sample help file with completely different material in content but not in type following the same procedure Christian uses to produce his help file and see if it also causes the crash? And if it does, we could maybe ask other developers whose help files don't crash, what workflow they use to create a CHM file?

I would suggest that you take it upon to examine and answer all of these questions. Because the problem - if I see it correctly - mainly occurs there and you can reproduce it well.

Where is the source of this CHM file? At me after all too the problem can be reproduced.
Then it would also be useful for me to play with the settings of the CHM file assembly process.
Maybe I'll find something...

Apparantly the help file is compiled with HelpScribble 7.8.0 - maybe that can help you.

You can use the CHMDir plugin http://totalcmd.net/plugring/chmdir.html to see the content of .chm files (with Ctrl+PgDn) - notice that only the 32bit version of the plugin can modify .chm files correctly.

You can also open .chm files with 7-zip.

Can you reproduce this with all Total Commander CHM files of multiple versions of TC?

If you provide an archive with all such files, then yes.
I don't have an archive of all versions of Total. Only latest...

Does the problem occur with both the English and the German CHM file of the latest beta and latest final?

yes.
Here are some:
from the first (at 7.50 TC) CHM file - this problem already presents.
IMHO something indeed is bad ONLY in the tool - HelpScribble 7.8.0 which is using for building such CHM.
AFAIK there is already 8.3.1 version on the site. Maybe this bug was already fixed?
7.8.0 – 2 September 2010!!!! Why Ghisler prefer to use only outdated tools?

Try this one file:

Same results. How about you?

How about you?
You know, the behavior was very strange.
With this reassembled help file in the afternoon, everything was fine with me.
Now I tried again, seeing your answer - and now everything is bad again ...
Very strange...

It looks like you just need to fundamentally find another tool that can compile this help file.
Not this one HelpScribble ....
