You can deselect the option: "Configuration" -> "Icons" -> "Show drive icons from Explorer" - then it is easy to distinguish the removable drives by the green arrow:
https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/olddriveicons.png (removable drives a (SD-card), h (USB hard disk) and u1 (Android phone))
But even with Explorers icons I don't think it is difficult to distinguish removable drives:
Windows 7:

Windows 10:
https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/win10explorerdriveicons.png (removable drives a (SD-card), e (USB hard disk) and u1 (Android phone))

Your screenshot is different because you are using the Explorer drive icons, which do not distinguish between removable drives and fixed drives.
As petermad describes, go to menu
"Configuration" -> "Options" -> "Icons" and uncheck the option "Show drive icons from Explorer".

Yes, but what happens if you do as I suggest and deselect the option: "Configuration" -> "Icons" -> "Show drive icons from Explorer"?

it works, but I would prefer system icons + overlay

Please make this overlay optional. I like to assign custom icons to my USB flash drives using Autorun.inf. With the overlay, the drives are less nice looking.

I will add it, the option will be IconOverlaysUsb=0 in wincmd.ini section [Configuration] starting with beta 2.
