[TC 11.58 RC3] Displaying *.avif (via IrfanView) fails on some PCs

Post by *pi.degroote »

When I configure Total Commander to display the following file types via IrfanView :

Path to Irfanview: C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view64.exe

Additional Irfanview/Xnview file types:
*.webp *.avif *.jxl

Then everything works fine on one of my PCs, displaying all 3 types of formats in the Lister using IrfanView.
Though on another PC, it displays only the 'webp' and 'jxl' types, and keeps displaying the 'avif' type as binary files, regardless of defining it as "Additional Irfanview/Xnview file types" (ignoring it as an image format altogether).

I cannot find an explanation myself, since I have put a copy of the same 'wincmd.ini' on both PCs.

I use IrfanView 4.75 x64 with the additional plugins installed (also version 4.75 x64) on both PCs (Win 11 24H2).

In case you wish to have a screenshot of the multimedia settings in the Lister, I can send you a screenshot. Thank you in advance.

Do you have the same i_view64.ini on both PC's? Maybe the AVIF.dll plugin is not activated in one of them (check "Help" -> "Installed plugins)" in IrfanView's main menu)

In IrfanView, the AVIF.dll is activated on both (all of my) PCs, which I checked and verified.
Also, on both PCs, I have associated all 3 file types (webp, avif, jxl) with IrfanView.

Opening either of those file types directly displays the given image in IrfanView, on both PCs without any issues (for 'webp', 'avif' and 'jxl' (means: JPEG XL)).

Only in the TC Lister (with IrfanView connection), it appears that AVIF images only display the way it should on one of them, and on the other PC, while also having a copy of that 'wincmd.ini' and corresponding IrfanView installation, AVIF images are shown as binary files.

Please check whether the other lister settings are the same or not. Also check whether there anything is set in
"Define view method by file type".

I have put a copy of the same 'wincmd.ini' on both PCs.
Have you checked that TC actually uses that copy of wincmd.ini - you can see which ini file TC uses in "Help" -> "About Total Commander" (or by entering: cd %COMMANDER_INI% in TC's command line).

I can actually confirm that the 'wincmd.ini' has been put into the corresponding folder (on all PCs), which I have verified.
Changing a setting changes the 'wincmd.ini' accordingly, and in case I make changes to 'wincmd.ini', they show up in TC the way it should be (without issues).

The item "Define view method by file type" has a check mark, but turns out to be an empty list on all PCs.

The only check box without mark is: Multimedia (AVI, WAV,...)

Finally, the AVIF issue still is there on one of my PCs.

Edit : TC 11.58 RC3 turns out to have the same issues with AVIF.

Is it the same avif images that you cannot see on the one PC - I have AVIF sample files that IrfanView cannot display (while Imagine can).

Does that PC have less available memory?
Does it also happen with a small (sample) AVIF file?

It does also happen with a small file (on that one PC).
For example, see the website https://tests.caniuse.com/?feat=avif, with the link https://tests.caniuse.com/image.avif.
When I download the 'image.avif' file and view it via the Lister, it simply displays there as a binary file, while on other PCs, the Lister with the same IrfanView implementation displays it as a green square.

Both PCs are equipped with 32 GB of RAM and more than enough storage. So this should not be an issue.

You may have multiple Irfanview installations, and launching the wrong one, or the path is set incorrectly in Lister:
Menu Options - Configure - Multimedia - Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP.
Since you use the same wincmd.ini in both, the path there would be the same, but Irfanview may be installed elsewhere.

It's also possible that the Irfanview version at that location is missing the AVIF.DLL, or has the wrong one (32-bit vs. 64-bit). The 32-bit AVIF.DLL is about 1.2MB, the 64-bit AVIF.DLL is about 2MB.

You may have multiple Irfanview installations, and launching the wrong one, or the path is set incorrectly in Lister:
Well, the location of IrfanView is exactly the same of both (and all of my) PCs. That is: "C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view64.exe".
Apart from that, I have no other instances or traces of additional IrfanView or Total Commander installations (or portable versions...)

As for now, I have fully uninstalled both Total Commander and IrfanView on that affected PC, and reinstalled them again.
Total Commander 11.58 RC3 (x64) is installed in: "C:\Program Files\Totalcmd" (also exactly the same location on all PCs).
IrfanView 4.75 (x64) is installed in its installer's default location, which is always: "C:\Program Files\IrfanView"
The IrfanView Plugins 4.75 (x64, same version and 'bitness') is also there in the same location.
The following plugins are also activated and fully functional: AVIF, JXL, WEBP. I have associated them with IrfanView and they all fully work.
On the contrary, in TC, I have enabled "Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP", the path to IrfanView is set to: "C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view64.exe".
The "Additional Irfanview/Xnview file types" are: *.avif *.jxl *.webp
These settings fully work for JXL and WEBP, but unfortunately not for AVIF.

Furthermore, the "Define view method by file type..." is an empty list, and now the check mark is also disabled.
The "Additional multimedia file types" is empty.
This time, I also tried to start with a 'vanilla' installation and by using the default settings, rather than using my personal 'wincmd.ini' and 'wcx_ftp.ini'.
This did not solve it either.
It's also possible that the Irfanview version at that location is missing the AVIF.DLL, or has the wrong one (32-bit vs. 64-bit). The 32-bit AVIF.DLL is about 1.2MB, the 64-bit AVIF.DLL is about 2MB.
The AVIF.DLL there is 2.01 MB and has the internal version 4.74.0.0 (x64), which is shipped with the 4.75 (x64) version of the plugins.

Here is my "Configure Lister" dialog box - "Multimedia" section :

[x] Use plugins or load bitmaps as graphics at startup
[ ] Multimedia (AVI, WAV,...)
[x] RTF
[x] Use Irfanview/Xnview to load graphics other than BMP
Path: C:\Program Files\IrfanView\i_view64.exe
[x] Show HTML as text with links
LS-Plugins: (empty list)
[x] Show links in HTML with surrounding { }
[ ] Use preview handlers from Explorer
[ ] Use thumbnail providers
[ ] Define view method by file type... (emply list)
Additional Irfanview/Xnview file types: *.avif *.jxl *.webp
Additional multimedia file types: (empty)

Try putting *.avif also in the "Additional multimedia file types"

Try putting *.avif also in the "Additional multimedia file types"
So I have put *.avif into the "Additional multimedia file types"
Then I have tried it with the "Additional Irfanview/Xnview file types" both as: *.avif *.jxl *.webp
and as: *.jxl *.webp

That way, I moved *.avif to the second type now, but without any result. It keeps showing up as a binary file instead.

I also tried it with the "[x] Multimedia (AVI, WAV,...)", so that the check box was effectively marked.

Sometimes, it looks like it takes a quarter of a second to 'load' the AVIF file (only 36422 bytes), before it gets displayed as a binary file. So there appears to be some kind of 'processing' here, though without the expected result. For such a small file on a very fast computer, I would not expect to even have a small waiting or 'loading' time to just see the binary data.
I notice that "quarter of a second" for that file every time when I view it after opening TC. On some other PCs that exact same file (of only 36422 bytes) displays as an image in the Lister.

Update : I can finally find a cause of the problem there :

When I put such a file into a folder path without spaces, e.g. "C:\Downloads" instead of "C:\My Documents", and finally, I make sure there are no spaces in the filename itself. Then it actually also works on that affected PC !

On the other hand, on the other PCs it also works with spaces in the path and/or filename...

Finally, I can narrow it down :
It turns out that this problem affects the C drive of all of my computers, while on the D drive (which the other PC has) everything just works fine.

So, I guess you can reproduce this by putting that AVIF file with spaces in filename (and/or path) onto the C drive (or perhaps the drive where TC and/or Windows are installed). Then the AVIF file always displays as binary.

Speculation: Perhaps on any drive where short filename generation is enabled. It looks like the plugin expects short filenames if the drive has this enabled. Perhaps Irfanview is sending short filenames if possible to plugins, except in the case where Irfanview acts as a hidden service window.
