[TC 11.57] Help page "SHIFT+F4: New text file", wrong text about time modifiers

Post by *white »

TC 11.57, English help

Help page "SHIFT+F4: New text file" contains:
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1], [T2], and [T3] for the multi-rename tool.
But help page "F7: Create directory" mentions:
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1] to [T4] for the multi-rename tool.
The German help page mentions [T1] to [T4] for both pages.

[T4] is special, when using it, TC will use the EXIF date from the file under the cursor instead of the date and time when the dialog box was opened. Any idea on how to better explain this?

Do you confirm that the mismatch between the help text, the text on the other help page, and the text in the German help is a bug?

Regarding your question for a better explanation, I'm not sure what you want to convey and where you want to convey that information?

It depends - the English F7 page tells to check parameters [T1] to [T4] for more details on using these parameters - this includes [T4], which does something else than the first 3. The English SHIFT+F4 page only refers to [T1] to [T3], because only those three use the date and time when the dialog box was opened. I would prefer a unified text, but it should consider the special case of [T4] here.

That still doesn't explain the mismatch. Both dialogs use the time when the dialog box was opened by default.
F7 help page:
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1] to [T4] for the multi-rename tool.
Shift+F4 help page:
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1], [T2], and [T3] for the multi-rename tool.
And you saying "The English SHIFT+F4 page only refers to [T1] to [T3], because only those three use the date and time when the dialog box was opened." makes no sense as well. Only [T2] and [T3] use the current date/time.

Help Multi-rename tool:
[T1] After this position, use last modification date/time from renamed file for all date/time fields (default).
Note: These are just switches! Use them with the other time placeholders, e.g. [T1][YMD] [hms]
[T2] After this position, use current date/time (when rename dialog was opened)
[T3] After this position, use current date/time (when rename options were last changed)
[T4] After this position, use EXIF date/time for images and MP4 video recording date if available, otherwise skip the file

And I did not ask about a mismatch between these pages only, but also with the German Help.

German help:
Umsch+F4: Neue Textdatei

...
Standardmässig fügen alle Platzhalter für Datum und Zeit das Datum und die Zeit von dem Moment ein, als die Dialogbox geöffnet wurde. Siehe Platzhalter [T1] bis [T4] im Mehrfach-Umbenenntool.
English help:
SHIFT+F4: New text file

...
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1], [T2], and [T3] for the multi-rename tool.
Can you confirm that this mismatch is unintentional and thus a bug, or not?

I have already written that a unified text would be better:

I explicitly asked you if the mismatch was a bug and you responded with "It depends". That's more like a half denial than a clear confirmation.

It would be helpful if you would pay more attention to what is written and make a little more effort when writing responses. I feel like not doing this wastes your time and mine. I think making a little more effort, like starting out with saying "Thanks. Confirmed.", makes a lot of difference.

I want to remove all the help file related posts from the bug reports forum. Therefore please check whether this has been fixed in the following pre-release help file:

Tested with tcmde1157b_chm.zip

Help page "SHIFT+F4: New text file" uses the word "in":
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1] to [T4] in the multi-rename tool.
But help page "F7: Create directory" uses "for":
By default, all placeholders for date and time will use the time when the dialog box was opened. See modifiers [T1] to [T4] for the multi-rename tool.

I used the translation of the German text "Siehe Platzhalter [T1] bis [T4] im Mehrfach-Umbenenntool.", which gave me "See placeholders [T1] to [T4] in the multi-rename tool.", which I changed to modifiers instead of placeholders. I didn't notice that it used "in" instead of "for". My English isn't good enough to decide which of the two is better... :(

I consulted with a native English speaker/writer/editor and the suggestion is to use "for" here.
