yes, Russia of course. but I've made a correction in my prev. post. Please reread it!
and yes - This strange situation with file versioning in the whole utility package, of course, does not add logic or simplicity
to understanding things. It seems that three different versions are used in the utility files, including the name of the archive
with the files.

Re: Quick Search filter shows empty panel after closing launched app with Esc
Could you provide version 2.3.0 to zhugecaomao for testing whether the problem doesn't occur with it? Then it would be a bug in 2.3.1 and later.for ver. 2.3.1 - was installed in my TC bundle. So for previous ver. 2.3.0 problem was not found as I see it...

For me version 4.4.4 is the one form Lev which supports searching in Descript.ion
I also have the original from Samuel, but it has the same version and problem.
I prefer the changed one as the error is not a real problem for me.

but you said that this is exactly the same ver. 4.4.4.4 which you have on a hands.
So definitely and zhugecaomao had it too - coz he said that he was not aware about
the new releases and he used his old version for weeks/months?...
Plus Of courser here we faced with problematic proper way to name the version of this utility
as I said we can find 3 different versions among all files: 4.4.4.4, 1.1.34.03 and 2.3.0
but never less - we have a sources ! https://tbeu.de/forum/QuickSearch_eXtended_source_2.3.1.zip
that's the main good news!

Re: Quick Search filter shows empty panel after closing launched app with Esc
Sorry, I thought that this would be version 2.3.1 - no wonder that I can't reproduce it if 2.3.0 doesn't have the problem.
I will test with 2.3.1.
I will test with 2.3.1.

Re: Quick Search filter shows empty panel after closing launched app with Esc
Thank you all for the checking.
first of all, 2ghisler(Author) my locale setting for non-Unicode programs is English (United States).
My Windows 11 display language is English (US), and my region is Singapore.
Image: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zhugecaomao/TotalCMD64/refs/heads/main/Screenshot/Region_Setting.jpg
I have downloaded and tested TCMatch versions 2.3.0, 2.3.1, and 4.4.4, and the issue persists.
I have keep all version of TCMatch including TCMatch.ini setting file here, for reference.

Re: Quick Search filter shows empty panel after closing launched app with Esc
hi all, to be clear, I summary my tests:
1. After deleting TCMatch64.dll, TCMatch.tbl, and TCMatch.ini from the TC folder, the issue disappears. This confirms that TCMatch is causing the problem.
2. I have downloaded and tested TCMatch versions 2.3.0, 2.3.1, and 4.4.4, and the issue persists.
3. Tried to use default TCMatch.ini, and also tried to modify TCMatch.ini setting line by line, the issue still persists.
4. I have tried closing all other applications, including AutoHotkey scripts, to rule out interference. The issue still persists.
5. Tried restart the PC, the issue still persists.
6. Tested it in a normal folder other than OneDrive, the issue persist.
7. This issue only occurs when the program (i_view32.exe) is closed using Esc. Closing it normally via the [X] button at the top-right corner does not cause this issue.
8. When the filtered results disappear, there is a noticeable jerk and a full panel redraw, as AntonyD described earlier.
9. This is not limited to *.exe files. It also occurs with *.txt files. For reference, I am using Notepad4, which can be closed using Esc (though only for certain files).
10. This issue is not limited to IrfanView. It also occurs with other applications such as ALTRun.exe (which can also be closed using Esc).
11. This is not limited to cases where only one result remains in the filtered list. It also occurs when there are multi results remaining (i.e., filter with "iew", the result will show "i_view32.chm", "i_view32.exe", "i_view32.ini", run i_view32.exe then close with Esc, the filtered results disappear too).
12. After this happens, the filtered result becomes empty. If I switch focus to the desktop and then back to TC, the result does not change. BUT, if I wait 1–2 minutes and then return to TC again, the filtered result returns to normal (i.e., showing only i_view32.exe).

Thanks for the details.
Which option do you have in menu Configuration - Options - Quick Search?
Can you try setting this to Letters - with search dialog?

That's odd, then the ESC key should not have any effect on quick search.
The problem is that I still can't reproduce it with all these settings!
Here is something else for you to test: A LONG time ago, in 2009, I made a tcmatch.dll with just PinYin support. This was later integrated into Quick Search Extended, so I discontinued it. I have now created a 64-bit version for you to test:
https://www.totalcommander.ch/win/tools/tcmatch.zip
To use it, the search string must start with a * or match at start must be unchecked, otherwise partial strings do not match.
I wonder whether the error also occurs with that simple tcmatch.dll, or only with the one from Quick Search Extended.

Leaving IrfanView with ESC and the display is filtered as before.

Thank you for providing the tcmatch64.dll. I have tested it and would like to share my findings.
Test procedure:
1. Removed the existing tcmatch64.dll, tcmatch.ini, and tcmatch.tbl
2. Installed your version of tcmatch64.dll and tcmatch.tbl
3. Restarted Total Commander
4. Tested opening and closing i_view32.exe with ESC — the filtered result displayed as expected, keeping filtered result
5. BUT when I tested PinYin support — the filter did not work; tcmatch64.dll did not appear to be active
6. Followed your instruction "the search string must start with a * or match at start must be unchecked" — PinYin filtering still did not work
7. Then I try to add
Code: Select all
TCMatch64=%COMMANDER_PATH%\TCMatch64.dllConclusion:
With or without this simplified tcmatch64.dll, the behaviour appears identical to TC's original built-in Quick Search — the "empty filter result" issue is resolved, but PinYin filtering is non-functional.
Did I miss out anything? Please advise if there is any additional configuration required. Thank you.

Re: Quick Search filter shows empty panel after closing launched app with Esc
Sorry, the 64-bit version was looking for tcmatch64.tbl and therefore didn't work. You can copy tcmatch.tbl to tcmatch64.tbl to make it work.
Here is a fixed one which uses tcmatch.tbl also in 64-bit:
https://www.totalcommander.ch/win/tools/tcmatch_pinyin.zip
This version allows a zero file result, so maybe it will show the same error with ESC as Quick Search Extended?

Yes, this works perfectly.ghisler(Author) wrote: 2026-05-19, 07:34 UTC Sorry, the 64-bit version was looking for tcmatch64.tbl and therefore didn't work. You can copy tcmatch.tbl to tcmatch64.tbl to make it work.

I tested opening and closing i_view32.exe with ESC — the filtered results remain displayed as expected, and the filter is preserved.
Pinyin filtering is also working correctly.
I will keep your tcmatch64.dll from now on
Regarding the “allow zero file result” behavior — is there any way to configure this?ghisler(Author) wrote: 2026-05-19, 07:34 UTC This version allows a zero file result, so maybe it will show the same error with ESC as Quick Search Extended?
In practice, I would prefer allow_empty_result=0, this would better match my workflow
Thanks again for your support.
