Copy / Paste: Is this normal?

Post by *Thorz »

Try this:

- Within TC copy a file with Ctrl+C.
- Close TC
- Go anywhere and try to paste the file. The file is not anymore on the clipboard after TC was closed.

I copy/paste lots of files daily between TC and other places (Nero, the desktop, etc) but I always had TC open. I didn't know that if you close TC the clipboard contents were erased (only for files, text is retained).

Is this normal? Thanks.

I cannot reproduce that, clipboard is maintained after closing TC.

- I can confirm :
- I copied a text-file, then closed TC. Attempting to paste it on the Desktop, *peanuts*, the "Paste" entry of the local menu is blurred !

- Same test leaving TC open : that works, I can paste the file on the Desktop.
- With an image file, I can paste it on the Desktop only… if TC is open, or else, same mess.

Under XP-Pro, TC 6.53

 Kind regards,
Claude

Oops, another test with deactivated CLCL, that's a clipboard utility, shows the same behaviour now.

As soon as I deactivate it, the clipboard is not cached anymore when closing TC and as soon as I reactivate it, the clipboard works again.

So, TC has a problem obviously...

:) Hello Jeff !

- I tested further with old versions :

- TC 6.03a —> ditto (in another HD FAT 32, but ran under XP-Pro)
- W.C 5.11 —> ditto - under Win 98 SE in my oldie PI - 166 MMX
- W.C 5.0   —> ditto - same PC than above.

:P Nice hare ! A game our pack has missed for ages !

Oh it seem's that the problem is not TC but Explorer related or should I say "It's the crappy old Windows"?
Anyhow. Try this, but beware
: After trying this you'll have to logoff and re-logon, so save all your data before.

1. Open TC
2. Copy a file via [Crtl]+[c] in Explorer
3. Open taskmanager and kill Explorer.exe
4. switch to TC
5. Try to paste via [Ctrl]+[V]
It does not work.
6. Now you may switch to Taskmanager, select Tab 'user', select the current user and click 'Logoff' (in german its 'Abmelden').

So lets make a bugreport @Microsoft, or better lets use CLCL - like icfu already does. ;)

You don't have to logoff after killing explorer.exe, just restart it. If you need an Explorer crash systray icons rebuilder, try Tray Manager. ;)

CLCL is a musthave definetely so there's really no downside to use it as a "workaround" for this problem, that's right. :)

Thanks, I did't know that.

If an application decides to empty the clipboard it does. Some applications let the user decide what to do. Excel for example asks the user on program closing if the clipboard content should be kept or not (only when the clipboard has a minimum size).
Explorer crash systray icons rebuilder
A well written application automatically rebuilds its try icon after Explorer crashed.

A well written Explorer wouldn't crash.

- The CLCL is a great tool ! I downloaded it.
- But it had no French version till today

Thanks for confirming the problem. I have installed CLCL and now am playing with it. It looks very powerful but the help is inexistent :(. Could I insert predefined text with a keystrocke with this utility? I use to do this in the past with ClipCache Plus but I don't use it anymore.

:) Hello !

- Hum… I rummaged a bit in the programme, and I can say you "Yes", you can set a keyboard-shortcut at will.

- You must configure the programme by launching the <CLCLSet.exe> file.
- The settings page has tabs for a lot of options…
- Unfortunately, there are some GUI bugs (some buttons are too small and things in the same painting…) and the English style is a bit special
- This soft is free-source, hence this could be fixed so easily ;)
- Like we point out, there is not any Help :|
- If I find time enough later, I would attempt to create a minimal piece of Tutorial in English (and French) … when I will have digested the use enough. And I bet that <icfu>-friend knows a lot of tricks to trim the use !

 Kind regards,
Claude

I wonder---

:) Hello Stefan !

- I wonder that Ch. Ghisler had not planned anything about this problem, at least a message at exit or an info in the docs…

- CLCL is a great free tool, but no easy to use because the lack of Help; indeed, I would prefer first a built-in feature, second a plugin to solve this…
