How to hide seldom-used drive letters

Post by *Cobras »

My Windows 8.1 computer has 4 media card readers with 4 drive letters.
These are CF/MD Card (H), MS/Pro/Duo Card (K), SD/mini-MMC/RS card (J), and SM/xD card (l) readers.

So my computer is crowded with too many driver letters which I do not use them. How can I hide these driver letters in total commander? My other Windows 7 computers also 4 card readers but they were well hidden in total commander. But they work if I plug in SDHC card. I do not know how I did on the Win 7 computer.

From the help:
HideRemovableNoMedia=0
When !=0, removable drives like USB card readers will not be shown unless a medium is inserted. Note that CD-ROM drives and floppy disk drives will always be shown. Apply to:
1: Drive button bar
2: Drive dropdown list
4: Search function - Drives
7: All
This function may be very slow with certain drives, so turn it off if you notice any slowdown.

I am a slower learner. Where to apply "HideRemovableNoMedia=0 ". When I typed in command line (c:\), it prompted "File not found".

Secondly, If I want to hide in "Drive button bar", should I apply "HideRemovableNoMedia=1.

Excuse my ignorance. Thank you.

It's impossible to lead us astray for we don't care even to choose the way.

Where to apply "HideRemovableNoMedia=0 ".
This entry has to be added to your wincmd.ini file.
Just select from main menu "Configuration - Change settings file directly"
=> Two file will be opened at notepad.
Use the one with wincmd.ini.

At "[Configuration]" section there are already some entries.
- Add a new line with HideRemovableNoMedia=1 direcly under [Configuration]
- Restart TC

This will hide the empty drive letters from the Drive button bar only.
If you insert a media into your card reader, just this drive letter will appear again.

Use HideRemovableNoMedia=2 if you want to hide them from Drive dropdown list only ... and so on.

After posting, I read through Help file. I found
c:\Users\In\AppData\Roaming\GHISLER\wincmd.ini
Then, I inserted HideRemovableNoMedia=0 or HideRemovableNoMedia=1.
under configuration. Closed and restarted TC. Nothing happened.
I wonder I might used wincmd.ini from a wrong place or not.

I booted and just opened wincmd.ini as sqa wizard describe above.

Just select from main menu "Configuration - Change settings file directly"
=> Two file will be opened at notepad

I see that the line "HideRemovableNoMedia=1" is there but it did not work.
It looks the command line should be modified.

Where is it exactly that you expect to se that the drive letters has been hidden - in the drive button bar, the drive dropdown list or both - or somewhere else?
