At this size it's very subtle and barely noticable, yes. But I zoomed in to roughly simulate the larger icon size experience, and then the difference became more prominent.

I will use the one with white for now because it's more similar to the one used for bar files shown as a menu. I will also add a 3rd image size for very large button, so there will be 3 fixed sizes like for the bar dropdown overlay.

Given all the effort that has already been put into it, wouldn't it make sense to implement it for the starter menu also? It would make sense and be useful.
Unfortunately it would be very difficult to add and take many weeks to get it bug-free, because currently there is no overlay display in the start menu (e.g. for .bar files).

I don't think it stands enough out with 16x16 px icons as it looks here by me - See: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/pauseoverlay.png - hard to notice, and I even know where to look

Sorry, other people found these ugly. Once you know where to look (because you activated the function!), it's not hard to see the new overlay.
