Ctrl-PgDwn not opening exe archives any more

Post by *brahman »

Hello,

for years I used Ctrl-PdDwn to open all kinds of archives, including exe files like this:
https://portableapps.com/downloading/?a=PortableApps.comPlatform&s=s&d=pa&n=The%20PortableApps.com%20Platform&f=PortableApps.com_Platform_Setup_29.3.paf.exe

that included an archive.

In the last few months I haven't been able to do that any more. I can open .msi files and .zip files like this, but for some reason it isn't working on .exe files any longer.

Would somebody know how to change this behaviour back?

It is still working on .exe files, but not on the .exe files you are trying now.

Yes, even with a clean wincmdx64.ini (see spoiler) I am getting the same results - meaning I am pressing Ctrl-PgDwn and nothing happens on the .exe file.

Yes, even with a clean wincmdx64.ini
Then is must be another program that is staling the keyboard input for Ctrl+PgDn - Often programs for your display adapter (video card) does this kind of thing, which then has to be disabled in the "guilty" program.

Maybe try https://www.ntwind.com/freeware/hotkey-screener.html

But why then does it work on zip and msi files?

If you are correct, wouldn't it stop working for all file types?

It doesn't work for me as well on this .exe file (CRC32: 89BCF348). But it does work on tc installer files and several other installer files.

The file linked to in the OP is an NSIS installer executable. TC can't open such files as archives without an appropriate packer plugin. And even then it's not guaranteed to work.

You are right - it was my Total7zip plugin that opened the file on Ctrl+PgDn

It seems that without any plugins installed, it is only self-extracting archives that is opened with Ctrl+PgDn on .exe files.

So i Guess brahman used to have a plugin (Total7zip) that opened the files, but has now removed it.

It seems you missed this in TotalObserver's changelog:

Code: Select all

1.1.2
[...]
- Removed NSIS and VDISK, use Total7zip with lastest 7zip instead.

Well, then you shouldn't recommend this plugin because older versions are not available on totalcmd.net. Or you should link to a source where one could get older versions.

Knowingly recommending a plugin whose current version isn't able to do what you claim it to do is ... not a good idea, for a lack of a better term.
