Well, there's virtual, visual and true. TC works on the latter level! ;-)

Anyway, it will evolve and adjust to the true additions like a new file system for
example. The fancy GUI is a front-end anyway for what works underneath.

Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to test Vista yet, although I'm a paying member of MSDN. The download is huge, so I will wait for the installer DVD.

A user has reported that TC crashes on Vista when trying to open lister with F3. Can anyone confirm that?

About the virtual folders, have you tried to access them via Commands - Open Desktop Directory?

Wow, this is very ugly and messy, huge icons and toolbars, bloated windows with unuseful crap. Hopefully it will be available to turn off all that stuff which microsoft think is "cool and fancy"... wow. Fascinating

Hi,

I suggest for anyone who's interested in Vista to read this (rather long) review. It's a great read, and the author explains a lot of stuff, especially about Virtual folders, the new Explorer design etc.

You should check it out.
And remember, it is still beta 1. The theme, for example, will most likely be exchanged with something else in the final.

Well, that depends on your display environment!

Vista won't be out for another year or two. In the meantime, technology marches forward. Vista is looking ahead to a future that will include much larger displays, not the little portholes most of us squint at today.

This is my monitor:

http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?art=1412

It's 24", runs at 1920x1200, and has changed my life. The benefits have already outweighed the cost. It makes me realize how much I would gain from an even larger monitor. My next one will be at least a 30".

Plenty of space for "huge icons"... and very easy on the eyes, too. I bet Vista will look great on it. TC sure does....

Now if TC only had dual trees + dual lists I'd be all set.

Wow. Thanks for that image! That's the behavior I was referring to in a previous post!

May we please have similar functionality in the TC panel paths... perhaps before Vista?

Well, after reading this description of Vista's virtual folders:

http://winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_virtualfolders.asp

... I don't think the MS implementation will work for me. I need a generic container. Vista creates a system query.

The problem with the query approach is that there would have to be something in common in the metadata of all the files in the virtual folder. Such as filetype, author, bitrate, or whatnot.

This means I would have to actually enter or algorithmically populate the metadata in each one in order for the virtual folder "query" to find the designated files.

For me, that would be ok in some circumstances, but not in most others.

The virtual folders I envision could contain such a hodge-podge of files that they would probably not share any generic metadata expressible as a query criteria. Or at least the query would be so complex as to be unproductive to create.

In most circumstances I just want to drag files into a "static" virtual folder... or maybe do something like creating a zip file: Select the files, "virtualize" them, type a name/location, press enter.

On the other hand, maybe I need to rethink my own process. Perhaps a metadata dialog would completely replace the copy dialog we are accustomed to...

I think this virtual folder system, if works as described in this beta, will only create big confusion to home/office regular users. Even now I have enough trouble describing differences between document and shortcut, can't imagine how difficult it will be with virtual folders.

Since you are an official tester, can you report this as a bug to Microsoft, please? It's not good that something which worked on all Windows versions suddenly stops working...

Thanks! Strangely, another user who contacted me by e-mail reports that lister works just fine for him...

Hello Christian,

I am pleased to say, in the new build 5219 (pdc05),
the tc lister problems do "no" longer exist.

enclosed a picture of tc in in Vista with glass and opened viewer.

Me thinks it will set 3rd party file manager software developers scrambling...

Check out the stacks view, virtual folder view, and especially the screen clip of the save dialog.
Let that crap (YEs, I am talking about Vista) be used by those who like Windows.
I for one will stick with TC - I am pretty confident that no MS file manager will ever beat TC.
Best regards: Csimbi
