[Req] A new site, logo, and official icon to Total Commander

Post by *Xtrician »

I think TC need a new site with advanced design because he have an old site design. The official logo and icon of TC are too old, he need a new 3D icon or something more advanced.

Im not say its bad but we are in 2006 year and the site is the same from 1996.

Things need to change.

Well, I think the site looks better now than it did in Mar 27, 1997 http://web.archive.org/web/19970327052421/http://www.ghisler.com/

Later on in Dec 06, 1998 it got more graphics: http://web.archive.org/web/19981206032516/http://www.ghisler.com/index.html

In Nov 24, 2002 Ghisler stopped using those graphic buttons again http://web.archive.org/web/20021124003939/http://www.ghisler.com/ so I don't think he is going to reintroduce a lot of graphics once more.

It's a pretty clean looking site. Somehow it comes across as very friendly... Maybe it's because of the white background, and few graphics. I wouldn't mind a more modern look, as long as it didn't mean blinking gifs and too much stuff...

I like old icon, btw. I've grown accustomed to it, and I know that it means quality!

Personally, I like the current site very well. It's easy to move around on, and you can usually find what you want. Simple is very good.

You not understand me..
For good program you need to view it in good show.

All the things to TC are seems simple.
Its good for us but there is a people that not like it.
Its only suggest to Mr. Ghisler.
To show to others TC in good mode.

Since I have my priorities set to efficient functionality, I'm not worried at all about some design being 'old'.
First, the label 'old' is questionable, because it often depends on trends and personal taste.
In the pc-world, a mem-stick of 64 Mb is already be considered as 'old', while it still can be very useful.

The expression "Things need to change" is a contradictio, because it implies, that the expression itself should be
changed too, once in a while.
Besides this, changes in the GUI have the danger of less accessabilty for the visual impaired users.

The ole icon is maybe another issue. It's a picture of a 1.4 Mb diskette, while the size of TC in the meantime has passed that border. So it doesn't fit the reality any more.

it is not contradictio, it is paradox.

I would expect, however, that the links to the English language Forum leads directly to it. It seems, that it leads to the main Forum page, from which I need to select the English language subforum manually.

I agree the site needs modernization. We who are already TC fanatics don't need a pretty site but someone looking from Google or following a url may be negatively impressed by the largely text presentation. Virtually all sites offering first-tier utilities have a dynamic, eye-catching presentation. When shopping for a file manager the first thing I want to see is screen shots. They should be in thumbnail format right up front and clickable.

Stay with the red, white, and blue, but make the little gray runes go away!

I think this maybe done with German and French forum link but with English there are thee subforum general, addon and poll so you need to choose one.

No they all lead to the same page, even though they have different links:

Well, I already did. If Ghisler wants to use them, he's free to.

I agree that the look of the web site should change to become a bit more modern, and, as some posters before me have mentioned, the three links to german french and english forum are somewhat misleading.

But what I really would not like to see changed is the TC icon, I think we all got accustomed to it through the years and I must say that I like it.

Since we're about 10 times as quick in identifying icons by color rather than shape or details, I don't think that will be a problem. The icon I designed retains the same colors as the original, and I have no problem whatsoever finding it on my desktop.

Edit: I made a quick mock-up of what I would consider a suitable design. It's not intended as a serious attempt, just a suggestion. Links don't work.
