[feature request] Reusing folder tabs

Post by *suncho »

Recently I found that my tabs tend to grow in number. After a day of use I end with 3-4 rows of tabs. I don't know if it is meant behaviour or a bug. Here is how it happens.
1) I have locked "my documents" folder. When I click on the tab I go to the folder.
2) When I click on "my pictures" in the panel, it opens another tab, as the first one is locked. If there was already "my pictures" tab it would reuse it.
3) If I double click the [..] while using the "my pictures" tab the panel is going back to "my documents" folder. However, it doesn't reuse the tab I already had, and leaves me with two "My documents" tabs.
Couple of times like that, and I end up with lots of tabs.

Could I have an option to "Always reuse tabs" no matter if locked or not? I would like when I go to a folder, TC to switch the panel to the first tab containing this folder (if such tab exists, locked or not). This would save me from "tabs clutter" ;)

Hi and welcome!

I'm not sure if this would help you, but did you try the tab-option 'locked but dirchange allowed'? With this setting, you can change the directory in a locked tab without opening a new one.
Maybe in some cases this could be useful for you to avoid a tab-mayhem.

Tab locked, changes allowed

Post by *suncho »

"locked & dirchange" tab does not solve my problem. First, jumping out of such tab would never reuse another tab. Second, it is not easy to go back to the original destination.
If I dirchange-lock "my documents" and jump to "my pictures", the title of the tab is still "my documents" (or whatever I named it first). But I can't just click on the tab and go back to "my documents" location. I should first click on another tab, and THEN click on "my documents", so I will go back to the original tab destination.

I am also aware I might use "folder favourites" for always-at-hand shortcuts to my folders. However, it is harder to find or add/remove in drop down list. In usability terms - tabs have "object" feeling attached to them, while text in dropdown do not. Folder tabs are great invention, and I am really attached to that :). I just can't get when (or why) TC decides to reuse a tab and when it decides not to.

with setting
[Configuration]
LockedGoToDriveroot=0

the shortcut [Ctrl]+[\] will lead you to the root of the locked Tab. (The value =1 will lead to the drive of root instead).

Of course you could also create a button with cm_GoToRoot.

Could I have a button that does "close all tabs" then? I coould simply use a shortcut to "nuke" all unlocked tabs. However, I can't find it in the .mnu ?

Hi suncho!

You are right, I have missed a feature like this too. An Ini -entry like: "ReuseExistingTabs=0" or "DontTakeDuplicateTab=1" would be very usefull!

As a workaround: The Tab -contextmenu has this item: "Close duplicate tabs". The solution for our problem isn't so far away...

When You use the Directory Menu (CTRL+D) to store your favorite folders (My pictures and so on) the Tabs are reused as well, check it out!

Don't want to repeat me here, but I wish this would be the standard in Total Commander!

Kind regards

Ctrl+Shift+W closes all inactive and not locked Tabs. The command is cm_CloseAllTabs=3008.

May I request for Alt+Ctrl+Shift+W to close all inactive tabs (no matter if they are locked) if that hotkey is assigned to cm_CloseAllTabs?

I suppose that this feature was not implemented
but I would really like to have TC reusing the tabs,
without opening a new ones.
Of course the tabs must lead into same folder and have
same sorting order to be auto-reused.
