Use user defined color in path background to indicate filter

Post by *Samuel »

It was suggested several times: here here Dont find third one.
But not with separate topic. Here it is.

Request: Use a user defined color in path background to indicate the quicksearch filter or a file filter is active.

Exactly it should be 2 colors, when the filepanel gets inactive.

Multiply this by 2 for odd and even lines but I support this request.

Why should there be odd and even lines?

Its only for the Path background (where also the breadcrumb panel is). Not the whole file panel.

Actually there are already 4 different (System) colors used:
Active Title Bar Background color
Active Title Bar Font color
Inactive Title Bar Background color
Inactive Title Bar Font color
multiply this with 2:
(Filtered) Active Path Bar Background color
(Filtered) Active Path Bar Font color
(Filtered) Inactive Path Bar Background color
(Filtered) Inactive Path Bar Font color
and you will get 8 different colors.

Anyway i support the request.

Not only that the filtered state would become clearer indicated,
the possibility to configure the first 4 colors independent from the system colors would by nice for mobile installations (or working with two different OS installations on the same machine) too.

No need to.

HolgerK,
No need to multiply by 2. We are only talking about adding one color.

Of course this was the basic request.
Sorry, sometimes I can't' stop to think one or two steps ahead.

The request is about a better indication that the panel below the path bar is filtered.

Samuel suggested to add one configurable color to mark the background of the path bar for this reason.
For me it would be more logical to mark the text of the path bar in different color (like Color by File type), but that's a matter of taste.

And "Exactly it should be 2 colors" one for the source (active) panel and one for the destination (inactive) panel.

The 4 system color (defined by the OS theme) are most of the time usable to identify the active panel, also if these color sets differs on different systems.

But what happens if you change the foreground or background color to indicate the filter state?
a) if you change only one color to indicate the filter state, it may be in conflict with the system color settings (theme color).
-> Black on DarkRed -> limited range of usable colors without changing system wide settings.

b) if you change both colors (back and foreground) for the filtered state, there may be no difference compared to the system determined colors of the inactive path bar.

Ergo: Do it right (make all 8 possible colors configurable) or expect complains if users start to use such a feature:
"need to adapt this single filter color every time I change the OS theme"
,"If I start a mobile TC, the path bar becomes unreadable"
,....

It would be great to customize more colors of TC!!!

For this feature I see only the need of 2 colors:
A background color for active and inactive panel header.
example image

The colors of filtermode and without filtermode would most of the time use the same darkness. So no need of new foreground colors.

I've seen color themes where the active and inactive title bar looks exactly like the the second line of your example image.

HolgerK wrote:For me it would be more logical to mark the text of the path bar in different color (like Color by File type), but that's a matter of taste.
I would prefer to keep the background of the inactive path bar like the background of the panel (light gray color), and the background of the active path like the inverted mark cursor (actual this is a light cyan).
Font color of the non filtered path bar like the normal panel font color (black), and font color of the filtered path bar in medium red.

So you may need only 2 colors but how about others?

Kind regards
Holger

In my opinion everyone could find two new colors for his current path colors.

But as I said:

I'm not only talking about personal preferences but also about usability of such a feature while using TC as mobile installation (e.g. PocketPC/U3).

Kind regards
