Thumbnail view different in left and right panels

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Hi, Boofo.

The problem has not been reproduced on my Vista machine so far: Using the T.C. 7.50 RC1 default thumbnail size of 96x96 pixels, the left panel and the right panel will have exactly the same spacing. Each row will display exactly 5 thumbnails.

+ Windows Vista Home Premium, 32bit
+ Aero Theme activated
+ Screen resolution 1280 x 1024 pixels
+ Windows scaling: 96 DPI
+ Monitor: same 19 inch Dell monitor as in the office (no widescreen)
+ Total Commander 7.50 rc1
+ Total Commander 7.04a

Kind regards,
Karl

I cannot reproduce the problem either. With a fresh ini file I get equally spaced 96x96 thumbnails in 3 columns (and appr. 3 rows) in both panels.

If I maximize TC I get 6 columns (and appr. 6½ rows) of equally spaced thumbnails in both panels

  • Windows scaling: 96 DPI

2karlchen,

Are you saying it is not happening for you now? I'm confused.

2petermad,

Are you running Vista?

2petermad,

I saw that in your signature but I thought you might also have Vista and tried it in there, like a few others here.

karlchen and I both had it show up strange on XP, but it shows up fine on his Vista. I even tried it with a fresh INI and it still was off in the right panel. It almost has to be something to do with widescreen monitors and XP. There is no other thing it could be.

Hi, guys.

I managed to make the problem go away on my Windows XP machine (cf details on the system in my previous posts) setting the T.C. window to fullscreen.

I managed to re-create the problem by resizing T.C. to its old window size which is not 100% fullscreen.
(Iconize all applications. Bring T.C. to the foreground. Resize T.C. by selecting "Tile vertically" or "Tile horizontally". Save this position. T.C. will cover the whole screen above the taskbar without being in full screen mode. The problem which Boofo reported and which I confirmed will be back.)

And I do not have any wide screen monitor, please, remember.

The same procedure will have the same effect using T.C. 7.04a.
So it depends on the T.C. window size. If the window is too small the problem will not occur here. If T.C. is in full screen mode the problem will not occur here. Only if T.C. covers the whole screen above the taskbar without being in fullscreen mode the problem will be visible here.

Kind regards,
Karl

2karlchen,

My TC window is always Maximized. So there has to be more than that going on. It goes away if you set the icons at 88x88 or 100x100 (104x104). It seems to act up at the default 96x96.

Tried that (with a fresh ini-file, see http://madsenworld.dk/tcmd/thumbs.png - I cannot confirm - there must be more prerequisites.

2Boofo
Resolution: 1280x1024 32bit (I don't have wide screen here at home)
Thumbnail size: 96x96 (since I am using a fresh ini-file)

2petermad,

Here is a pic of mine maximized with a clean INI file:

http://www.fathers-rights-forums.com/Hotlink_Images/tc_maximized.png

That is at 1680x1050, 96x96 thumbnail size on XP Pro SP3.

Also, I have a keyfile. I don't keep it in the tc directory and I didn't move it for the test. ;)

That picture was very helpful.

It is the folder tabs that does it! If the left panel is shown in a folder tab then the spacing between the thumbnails is increased on that side.

It only happens in a folder tab in the left side.

I very rarely use folder tabs, that's why I couldn't reproduce the bug.

Hi, petermad.

As both panels use folder tabs, folder tabs cannot be the reason. On all the systems where I could reproduce Boofo's problem and where I could make it go away without changing the thumbnail size, you will see a minimum of two folder tabs in each of my T.C. panels.

What makes the problem appear seems to depend on a calculating error (maybe rounding error):
+ monitor geometry (width * height in pixels)
+ T.C. window size (width * height in pixels)
+ thumbnail size (width * height in pixels)
+ (there may be more, I do not know)

If there is a particular correlation between these 3 factors, then the available space inside the lefthand panel or inside the righthand panel are calculated incorrectly. I tend to assume that the effect of this miscalculation is that always the left panel is assumed to be 1 pixel smaller than it really is. This would explain why changing the T.C. window size only a little bit makes the problem disappear.

Yet, as I cannot verify this by going through the T.C. source code, I will stop speculating and wait for Christian's analysis.

Kind regards,
Karl

Have you tried viewing totally without tabs! That includes removing the checkmark in the config at: "Show tab header also when there is only one tab".
you will see a minimum of two folder tabs in each of my T.C. panels.
Yes, but what if NO tabs are used - that is when the bug dissapears again.

The thumb size does not seem to be of importance - I can also make it happen with my custom size of 96x72.

But the size of TC's window in combination with the thumb size seems to be important - if I slowly decrease the width of the window it seems to happen just at the point where the distance between the thumbs in the right panel has reached its minimum - then suddenly the left panel reduces the number of thumbs pr. row, but not the right panel - and only when in a folder tab in the left side.

I think it has to do with the fact that the width of the left panel is reduced by 1 pixel when folder tab is enabled, while the right panel has the same width with or without folder tabs - that makes the space in the two panels unequeal, which with a few window widths results in fewer thumb columns in the left side.
