Support MTP

Post by *LonerD »

1. Show MTP device in the drive dropdown combobox and in panel with drive icons.
2. Copy/move files to MTP device with TC.
3. Refresh MTP device panel after copy files to it or creating new directory. Now we need to manually refresh the panel to display the copied files.
4. View, edit files on MTP (opportunity to set maximal size of the file to be opened) - copy file to temporary directory and open it (such as Windows do).

Unfortunately I need to call OLE2 functions to list MTP devices, so it can be terribly slow. I therefore decided to show "Computer" instead.

Christian, I fully agree to LonerD request. I hoped this feature would be in the current new version of TC.
You know android 4 and accordingly all popular android devices like Galaxy S 3/4... etc. has MTP. The MTP device can be easily used in Explorer, but switching to Explorer from TC or using the long way of accessing the desired data in TC over "Computer" is not a very convenient way. On my PC W7 64b. using TC8.5ß3 manual access to the Galaxy S 3 over "Computer"-path (with manual refresh) comes without delay.
So may be you could
- add this as test-feature option. For those PCs that have no problem with the access speed.
- Another option would be to notify the user of this feature, that manually refresh of TC view may be needed to display MTP device (for example in panel drive icons). It is still even a more convenient way then switching to Explorer.

Unfortunately we never know what other junk is loaded off in this virtual folder and can cause a big slowdown.

OK. Unfortunately I am not the virtual folders specialist and can hardly judge about this.(
If you have some time, please try to implement something in this matter. Fast and convenient connecting of MTP android mobiles to PCs has certainly significant importance and it will surely increase.

I support this wish. I have Samsung Galaxy S2 phone which is shown in \\Computer as \\GT-I9100 which has 2 virtual drives inside: \\Card and \\Phone (SD card and internal device memory). TC 8.50B3 is able to browse these drives and properly shows the content, directories and files. However, the difference is that every directory is shown as an independent network resource, like \\Android, \\Documents etc, but TC is able to correctly return back to the parent directory "..", not to the network root(!). Copying in both directions PC <--> device is also possible with only a few limitations. However, viewing the files with the built-in viewer is not supported, TC reports "Search path not found!". The same error is shown after attempt to search for the files, even if we see the desired file in the current directory.

Of course, it's not a bug but a long-term problem which, I hope, will be solved soon or later. Right now I would suggest to implement a most easy (and slow, maybe) search and view functions, because they are most important. About viewer: if the direct access to the file on MTP device from built-in viewer is not possible, please consider the same technique like for archives, when we are able to view the file inside the archive because it is unpacked in the temporary directory ...\TEMP\_tc\ and the viewer can show its content from out there. Maybe later it would be possible to make more elegant way and add other functionality.
