SOLVED [TC9] "Show overlay icons" handled diff. in

Post by *petermad »

I have disabled showing overlay arrows on links, system-wide by using Ultimate Windows Tweaker 2.2.0.0 for Windows 7 (it replaces the arrow with a transparent blank overlay).

In TC9 x64 the overlay arrow for links are not shown even if "Show overlay icons, e.g. for links" is enabled - as expected.

But in TC9 32bit the arrow overlays for links are always shown no matter the setting of "Show overlay icons, e.g. for links".

Windows explorer does not show the overlay arrows on my tweaked system, so I expect TC not to do so either - as the 64bit version of TC

x86 and x64 apps are using different settings for the overlays. it is possible that Ultimate Windows Tweaker "disabled" links overlay only for x64 apps.

In the 32bit version I see the overlay arrows on icons for all .lnk files in the %$COMMON_STARTMENU% , %$STARTMENU% , %$COMMON_DESKTOPDIRECTORY% and %$DESKTOP% directories
- so that is for links to both 32bit and 64bit applications.

But if you mean that the Tweaker disabled overlay only for icons shown inside x64 apps (like TC x64)) - maybe that is the case

If you're looking forward to disabling the shortcut overlay in the 32 bit version of Total Commander, you need to apply the proper string value in a different key.

The 64-bit programs use the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons" key for the icon info, where you probably have a string value named "29" with path to the blank icon.

For 32-bit programs the key for icon info is "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons", where it's most probably all empty. If you want to remove the shortcut overlay in 32-bit programs, you will need to make the same "29" string value in that key.

Thanks, that works - after also placing a copy of empty.ico in the C:\Windows\SysWOW64 directory.

To moderators: Please move this thread - not a TC-problem.
