[TC 11.01] Help - Dialog box: New Connection (FTP): Alignment and text is wrong

Post by *white »

[Help - Dialog box: New Connection (FTP)] wrote: With this dialog box you can open a new connection to an FTP server. Choose a saved connection from the drop down combo box, or create a new connection by typing a host name or URL.
  1. You can also download a single file.
  2. "a saved connection" in TC means a saved connection in the FTP Connect manager and not an entry from the MRU list.
  3. Alignment is off for the descriptions of the OK and Cancel buttons (English Help only)
I think it is not necessary to explain the MRU list, so my suggestion is to change the intro simply to:
With this dialog box you can open a new connection to an FTP server or download a file.
Suggestion for description of OK:
Opens the FTP connection or downloads the file. Entered passwords will not be saved in the Most Recently Used list.
Suggestion for description of Cancel:
Closes the dialog box without doing anything.

You can also download a single file.
Isn't that documented here:

If you enter a Web address, like http://www.someserver.com/somefile.htm, Total Commander will try to download the file with the http protocol.

That doesn't make the first line right. And don't you agree my suggestions make it much clearer?

I do agree.

But I also think that it should be made clear that it is only files entered with the protocol http: or https: that can be downloaded, not files entered with ftp: or ftps:

Also if the server is set up to redirect http: calls to https: then TC does not comply to that, you have to specifically enter https:

In TC 11.02rc1 I see these changes:
With this dialog box you can open a new connection to an FTP server. Choose a saved connection from the drop down combo box, or create a new connection by typing a host name or URL.
changed to:
With this dialog box you can open a new connection to an FTP server, or download a file via http or https. Choose a previously entered connection from the drop down combo box, or create a new connection by typing a host name or URL.

changed to:

OK Opens the connection and adds the URL / server name to the drop down combo box. Even if you entered a password using the method above, the password will NOT be saved in this list.
changed to:

Cancel Closes the dialog box without opening a connection.

I guess that covers the requested changes :-)

Alignment is fixed in TC 11.02rc1.

No it doesn't. Because I requested:
white wrote: 2023-09-07, 14:12 UTC I think it is not necessary to explain the MRU list, so my suggestion is to change the intro simply to:

The wording "create a new connection by typing a host name or URL" is strange considering the action of downloading a file or making a connection to an FTP server.
The wording "and adds the URL / server name to the drop down combo box" fools the user into thinking that his entered url / server path is saved forever, while only the most recently used entries are saved.

Sorry, but I think petermad's suggestion is better.

petermad didn't suggest that. petermad agreed with me, but suggested to also add that files can be downloaded by entering http(s) . I have no problem with petermad's suggestion, I'm not suggesting to remove that information.

Hmm, maybe like this?

Code: Select all

OK	Opens the FTP connection or downloads the file via http/https and adds the URL / server name to the most recently used list (drop down combo box).

That is acceptable to me.

And how about changing the text:

Why would you change this? It provides less information.

Well, I think "Choose a previously entered connection" is weird if the entry is a download url. And I think "create a new connection" is also weird for a download url and I dislike this wording for an ftp connection as well.

How about changing the text in the way as shown below, removing the text in red and adding the text in green:

Dialog box: New Connection (FTP)

With this dialog box you can open a new connection to an FTP server, or download a file via http or https. Choose a previously entered connection from the drop down combo box, or create a new connection by typing a host name or URL.

Connect to:
Here you can enter the name of the server, e.g. ftp.microsoft.com, or a complete URL (ftp, ftps, ftpes, ftpis, http, https), like ftp://username:password@servername:portnumber/path. All parts of the URL (except for the server name) can be left out. Examples:
ftp://somewebhost.com/home/myusername
https://www.google.com
myself@myserver.com:1021
If you enter a Web address, like http://www.someserver.com/somefile.htm, Total Commander will try to download the file with the http or https protocol, respectively.

You added the green line, but you forgot to remove "Here" first. So now the text is:
Connect to:

German text is OK.
