It's not an icon, it's two bars drawn directly. If you don't find it pretty, you can suggest a border color and fill color which you prefer.
I have considered using icon Nr. 36, but it's not so easy to view when overlayed over the sync icon. And the sync icon can be changed by the user.

Sorry, for now I only show it in the button bar as a live feedback. It's not so useful in the menus because you have to open the menu first.

It is not the colors that I don't like, it is the size and proportions - It does not make med think of a pause symbol. I suggest to make it a little smaller.

In this screenshot/mockup you see what it looks like currently by me to the left and what I would suggest it could look like at the right: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/syncpausebutton.png

I think it would be better if it was a bit smaller. This is how it looks for me now (16, 24, 32 pixel size icons):

I'm using 16x16, and at first I didn't even realize that it's intended to be a pause icon with two bars. To me it looks as just a simple repeated pattern of interleaving vertical lines. With larger sizes the bars don't even fit the button, they extend beyond its borders.

I also drew an example of how it could look to be more recognizable and tidy:

However, since the bars mostly obscure the underlying main icon, its protruding pixels don't look like an icon but more like drawing artifacts, so maybe it's better to remove the main icon completely. Then it would look like this:

(Also, semi-transparent bars could be an option, but I tried them and didn't like the result; it wasn't clear enough to see what's going on in the picture.)

Not good this inconsistency. This leaves an unprocessed residue.

You didn't remove the main icon, just the inner part. But this depends on the used icon library, so it's unfortunately not feasible. :(

I will make the pause icon smaller.
Why do you spend effort on somehow remaking some existing icon, putting some artifacts on it,
instead of calmly creating another special icon in the general ICON-set?

Because that will make all external icon sets for TC obsolete.

Because that will make all external icon sets for TC obsolete.
With this approach to problems, we will have icons in the win3.11 style here for a long time ((((((
For owners of THOSE third-party icon sets, there is always a risk and problem that the icons will not be suitable for use with the next new assembly of Total that they allow themselves to download/create.... Because no one will ever make such sets with lifetime guarantee. And if at some point in time in some Total dialogue suddenly some icon turns out to be loaded NOT FROM the current set of icons, then it’s just another time to correct this set.

I'm still thinking about making a bottom-right overlay as I do for the dropdown menus (.bar file shown as menu).

Here are 4 overlay icons, the first is the one I use for the dropdown menus, the 3 others are possible options for the paused synchronized change directory function:
https://www.ghisler.ch/images/bottom_overlay.png

What do you think?
1. Would you prefer such a small bottom overlay, or a big overlay over the entire icon?
2. Which of the 3 would you prefer?

1) small overlay
2) if only blue buttons are considered three options
from the picture above, then I vote for the second option of them

But I must note that I don’t see a significant difference between the first and second blue button.
But for some reason the eyes accept the second button. Is there a difference of a couple of pixels?

The first pause overlay is filled with yellow, the second is filled with white.

The first pause overlay is filled with yellow, the second is filled with white.
Strange - physically I can't see these colors there but something internal from the souls deep is saying that the second one is better)))
Which means the white filling is better)))

I think the suggested icons are, indeed, much better than the current all-icon overlay. Among the 3 variants I like the first two (2nd and 3rd pictures). The last one is too small to make out that it's the pause symbol. As for coloring, I think yellow is a bit more distinctive, I'd choose it. The white one is too neutral, it does not have the feeling of something to be actively aware about.
