You can deselect the option: "Configuration" -> "Icons" -> "Show drive icons from Explorer" - then it is easy to distinguish the removable drives by the green arrow:
https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/olddriveicons.png (removable drives a (SD-card), h (USB hard disk) and u1 (Android phone))
But even with Explorers icons I don't think it is difficult to distinguish removable drives:
Windows 7: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/win7explorerdriveicons.png (removable drives a (SD-card), h (USB hard disk) and u1 (Android phone))
Windows 10: https://tcmd.madsenworld.dk/win10explorerdriveicons.png (removable drives a (SD-card), e (USB hard disk) and u1 (Android phone))

Re: if drive has "eject" in menu - add small icon overlay
Your screenshot is different because you are using the Explorer drive icons, which do not distinguish between removable drives and fixed drives.
As petermad describes, go to menu
"Configuration" -> "Options" -> "Icons" and uncheck the option "Show drive icons from Explorer".

deselect:
https://ibb.co/r7qjbh6
it works, but I would prefer system icons + overlay
