Hello !
• Please, verify where your INI files are located from the Help Menu >> About…
- Whether they are @ another location than the one stated in the Registry, this could cause that they are not found.
- However, I wonder that you don't get any error message … ?
Kind regards,
Claude

ZIP ?
2J.A. Gruys
Hi again !
• You might search in the registry for “Ghisler”…
- However, if you installed the programme only from a ZIP backup or so in that machine, there is indeed not any registry-key…
- The registry key contains only the location¦s of the programme and of the INI files, nothing more.
- Only the installer writes this key, of course.
- Aside, this is a problem when having several versions, in which some installed "by hand" …
• Else : Is the "Notepad" still present as the default editor in Windows ?
- Anyway, this is pretty odd, I wonder to hear the continuation !

Maybe your have deleted your Windows Notepad.exe file - that's the program TC will open for editing your ini files. It will NOT use the editor you have defined at Configuration -> Edit/View -> Editor for F4

Thanks to all. I think I begin to understand it now.
I still have the file notepad.exe in my windows directory, but as editor for F4, I exchanged it for something better (NoteTab Light).
If that is the explanation why "Change Settings Files Directly" does not work anymore, without, moreover, giving any error message, I must confess that I consider this a Big Bug rather than a acceptable explanation.

TC tries to open those ini-files with notepad.exe.
So just try the windows "Start->Run" and type "notepad.exe" and enter. This should open the notepad in your windows. If not that is the reason why TC cannot open your ini files.
If notepad opens correctly there must be something else wrong.

I must perhaps retract part of my previous message, for now I see that at some time in the past, and quite forgotten by me, I must have succeeded in making NoteTab my default Windows text editor. Changing that back, but keeping NoteTab as TCMD's F4-editor, brought back the ability to Change Settings Files Directly.
I am sorry for any confusion I may have created.

Mystery
2J.A. Gruys
Hi !
• Hum… Kind of misunderstanding here…
- Currently, the feature can work with Notepad.exe ONLY !
That Peter said is : If you have no longer it, that can't work, and that the F4 editor shall be NOT used instead !
- So, the mystery darkens… Does your Notepad work still ?

Old OS ?
2J.A. Gruys
Hi (saga continuation !:D ) !
• Could you have¦had another old OS in this machine ?
• In example, I've XP-Pro SP1 like you, but also a Win 98 SE which no longer works, although all its stuff remains in the PC…
- So, supposing that you had an older OS and TC already, then install XP without format the HD, TC could search for THE OLD Notepad.exe … Hum…

Hello Clo,
TC starts the notepad exe from Windows. I have managed to overwrite my notepad.exe by my favoured Texteditor "TextPad.exe".
For this purpose I renamed it first to notepad.exe. Then I replaced the three copies in my windows folder:
%windir%\notepad.exe
%windir%\system32\dllcache\notepad.exe
%windir%\system32\notepad.exe
While doing this I 've ben asked 2 times for the Windows Install CD and canceled this.
Now Windows left the 'TexpPad' -Notepad.exe untouched and when I now use the "Change Setting Files Directly" the files are opened in Textpad instead of Notepad.

Which handle ?
2Sheepdog
Hi Stefan !
• Well, but we don't know if J.A. Gruys performed such a handle… unsuccessfully ?
• Anyway, I guess that the lack of error message is a bug, but indeed, impossible to define it as long as we can't reproduce…
- I made some tests also, I can't get that "lack" bug !
• In fact, I didn't ask for a way to change the default for that INI editor, but I regret that TC be unable to use the stated one for F4, either always, or when the default from Win is not found…
