When you try to delete a big (ammount of files) directory then TC goes thinking about how to do it probably. This will take up to 15 seconds before TC gives the message if you want to delete the dir with all its contents in it. During this time there is no background button, so you have to wait till TC is ready thinking....
You can completely disable the size calculating if you want to delete a directory. Normally you haven't to know how many files your're deleting.
You can find this option under Settings - Operation
I wrote email to the author about this 2 months ago:

But sometimes for big directories it takes quite much time to count dir size. It would be nice if user could skip this when he wants. I don’t know how it’s easier for you to do this. Maybe show one more button (“Skip size counting”) on Delete Progress dialog in place of “Background” button. When TC finishes counting and starts deleting, this button will be changed to “Background”. Or maybe it’s easier to show one more window (“Counting dir size...”) on top of Delete dialog with Skip button.
The same can be applied to other dialogs (Copy, Pack, not sure about Move).

Yes, but we do not know when. Christian says his to do list is very very long It would be interesting to know the size of this list, 500 items, 1000, 5000?
oh well, that's what I call a serious list! Seems like you have enough work already until about TC 15.0
Well the list indeed is impressive.
I undersand that you won't provide the whole list for public polls but... are there any diplomatic ways for us to move items in your list up and down? Besides screaming in the forum
2ghisler(Author) - maybe it's possible to add something like SHIFT-key modificator to skip size count? (so if one press DEL - TC will first count size, if SHIFT-DEL - it woun't) ? (I know, shift is already binded, so maybe ALT? (OR CTRL+ALT )
To me it doesn't matter that it's counting (although it would be nice to skip it) but I like a button to continue my work (background). Now I have to wait for TC to finish calculating and then I can background it.
Its all about multi tasking.... Let the PC do its work when it has time and let me do mine....
