Sound "critical error" whe using <Shift+Ctrl+F8

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

Sound "critical error" whe using <Shift+Ctrl+F8

Post by *HolgerK »

Starting point is "Show -> Separate tree Shift+Ctrl+F8 -> 0 (None)".
Press <Shift+Ctrl+F8> twice to switch to "2 (Two, One For Each Panel)"
-> If you press the two keys fast enough, the window sound "Windows XP critical error (kritischer Abbruch)" is played, and the the second keystroke isn't executed.

Tested with TC7rc1, WinXP pro (Ger).
TC is not configured to play any sound.

I did additional tests with the previous betas and this error appears also in Beta 2, 3 and 4, but not in TC7b1.

Kind regards,
Holger

If you press the two keys fast enough
Which two keys? - Shift+Ctrl+F8 are three keys!

Anyway - I cann't reproduce this, no matter how I press the 3 keys (TC7rc1).

Hi,

I can confirm this on WinXP EN Pro SP2 & updates - TC pb4 & RC1, but only the first time it is used after launching Total Commander.

To reproduce:
* Start TC
* Hold down Ctrl-Shift, Press F8 twice but quickly

Subsequent tries to reproduce fail. You have to close TC and launch it again for the sound to be heard and only the first separate tree to appear.

2Jonathan
Now I could reproduce it too - not every time I try, but often enough to call it reproducable.

Hmmh, I should write this a little bit more precise. :D
If you press the hot key quickly two times.
BTW: It's the same effect, when I remap cm_SwitchSeparateTree to <F11> (without any modifier key)

Under WinXP this is nearly 99% reproducible here.
It doesn't depend on any special wincmd.ini setting (the same effect with an empty ini file).
Running Win98SE on the same machine(AMD XP1700+, 768MibiByte), I can reproduce this only for the first time after TC restart.
On both windows version the sound is repeated in an interval of about 1-2 seconds, if you don't release the hot key (maximum keyboard repetition rate is active).

Kind regards,
Holger

Holding down the hotkey here makes the sound three times per second (almost in perfect triplets :-D).

This must be an error with your windows installation. :D
The length of "critical error.wav" is about 0.89sec.
Wondering how this could be played 3 times per second.

Kind regards,
Holger

This is intentional. The critical error is played when the tree is locked by the background thread for updating. It should inform the user that the tree view state cannot currently be changed.

I would prefer a more non critical sound in this case.
I just need to press the hotkey once again (waiting for a very short while) and all is okay.

Maybe it's better to add one additional entry to the TC-sound scheme.
So the user can disable this sound or select for example the "ping.wav" ("Standard -Warnsignal" in german) sound.

Kind regards,
Holger

I'm no musician, but AFAIK a perfect triplet should sound like this: 3-2-triplet.mp3

Maybe your CPU is too fast.

Not fixed in TC7rc2 - should this thread be moved to: " TC7 Behaviour which will not be changed" :?:
