Is there a plugin that allows searching through descript.ion

Post by *crimpshrine »

Is there any plugin that automatically searches through descript.ion file automatically and can associate the search results with the files in descript.ion? (When you do a commands--seach - It would be nice if this was integrated in total commander, given that it supports the files and descript.ion, but does not natively offer that as a search option)

It would really be helpful for something like searching usenet downloads (if you have an app like newsbin that saves the usenet descriptions to each file in descript.ion) Many times the actual file name is not a clear representation of the actual file.

I know I can go to each directory and just manually search the descript.ion file for the file, or view the directory in "show comments" mode, it's very cumbersome when you have 20+ subdirctories your looking for a file in.

Thanks for any help.

You should try the 'plugins'-tab in the search window. There you can choose the built-in plugin 'tc' and its field 'comment'.

This should return all files having the search text in the according descript.ion file.

Thanks!

That actually does make it allot easier.

I just wish there was a way to have it then display the full property that is selected along side the file in the search results field.

In this case the commment.

Thanks for the tip, that is better then searching through ALL text!

When I create a custom columns view "Comments", it works in the Search results field.
When I choose "comments" in the context menu of the columns, it is not functional. Why?

@crimpshrine

Maybe the tool "KommentarSuche" can help?

It's in german but easy to handle, just start the exe and type in your search.

What do you mean by that? Could you give an example?

I think Stance means that -after a search has been fed to listbox- the regular comments view (CTRL+SHIFT+F2) doesn't work.

Ahh - I see. I can confirm that.

EDIT: I have filed a bug report: http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?t=15331 about this.

Thanks for the pointer to that app.

I checked it out and it would help if I had all the files I wanted to search for in one decript.ion file.

Thanks though that makes me wonder if I should just look into how exactly you make a plugin for total commander.

It would be nice if there was a text box check on the search menu under the "find text" option that had a box for search only the descript.ion or files.bbs files.

Then on output from that search (the search results window) it lists the files it found, + the associated comments.

Just "save" a search for descript.ion! Then when you need it, bring it up and type in the text you are looking for.
