Packing multiple files by WinRAR results to TC quits (crash)

Post by *NordicAlbino »

Problem:
When I want to pack multiple files by WinRAR (latest version) by selecting these file and than choosing via the contextmenu WinRAR -> Add to archive..., TC quits (crashes).

Info:
When I do the same with WinZip, everything works fine but I always prefer to use WinRAR.

Packing one file only by WinRAR gives no problems.

I don't use the internal RAR compression tool(s).

Not confirmed on TC 7 & WinRAR 3.70 final.
Please write your WinRAR, TC and Windows versions.
Also may be the problem with other Explorer extensions...

Windows XP Pro Dutch v5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600

My previous version of TC didn't had this problem.

I just controlled it by doing the same thing with Internet Explorer and it works fine there.

This has nothing to do with WinRAR! As I have explained already a 1000 times, the right click menu is created by Windows itself, Total Commander just requests it. Any shell extension in that menu can cause the crash, they are all loaded with the menu!

To correct it, please try the following:
1. Get the free tool ShellExView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
2. Disable all context menu shell extensions one by one (you can hide/keep
those belonging to Windows, they are usually OK).
3. Continue until Total Commander stops crashing

With all respect but I still have my doubts. :(
This is what I found:

Fact 1: Before using the ShellExView program (I've used it already before), I've checked the contextmenu's between Windows Explorer and TC and the conclusion is that both are exactly the same.

Fact 2: WinRAR'ing and all the other contextmenu commands in the Windows Explorer shell works fine (since a couple of years).

Fact 3: The same action in the previous version of TC has always worked fine.

A new fact: I've found that WinRAR'ing movie files in TC results in a crash of TC. Not within Windows Explorer. Compressing other types of files gives not any problem(s)!

Marginal note: Because my profession is ICT developer since 1981, my intuition still says that the error is most likely to find into TC, but nothing is sure until the bug is find of course.

[/size]
Fact1 doesn't mean that the extensions work well in both environments

Fact2 doesn't mean that there is no extension which write in wrong space and depending of what is overwritten a crash occurs.

Fact3 the same as for Fact2, a new version of TC may use other memory ranges which are now overwritten by a strange conetxt extension.

So please do the job and disable the extensions step by step.
This way you will find the problem.

Finally I found the reason. :D

Mr. Horst Epp, may I offer you my apologies because you're right. :!:

After I selectively desactivated my contextmenu items one by one, the only left was WinRAR himself! I reïnstalled it and now it works fine.
Silly me, I'd should it done first.

Thanks a lot!

:) Hi Christian !

• OK, but we miss a "Miscellaneous issues" section or so, WinRar is not specially a plug-in, or do you consider it such as ?
