thumbnails speed

if i have tc setup to get thumbnails from xnview, should browsing thumbnails be as fast as xnview?

i think i have it set up correctly, but it's nowhere near as fast as xnview and i don't think it's any faster then with "get from irfanview" option unchecked (i do have the correct path set up in the list configuration).

what speed are you referring to:

- First time thumbnail extraction
- Displaying already cached thumbnails

Extracting thumbs using XnView or Irfanview is not as fast as in the programs itself. Transferring the thumbs from one program to another is probably making it a bit slower. There are several plug-ins which can be faster theoretically (SgViewer, Imagine and other).
What is dead slow in TC is reading cached thumbnails.

Keep in mind that each software has it's own cache.
TC isn't able to read the xnview thumbnail cache, moreover the size of the thumbnails are not necessarily the same.
As a matter of fact I use big thumbs for xnview, so as to appreciate them better, and small ones for TC as I only use it to organize them.
Using 112x112 size, the speed of TC makes me happy enough and the size of the thumbs DB file is rather slim for my needs.

this is what's really slow, and it makes no difference if it's from xnview or not

this is actually fast, but maybe it's because i don't have many pictures in the cache.

The cache should be very fast if
- the cache file isn't heavily fragmented
- you aren't using a dumb virus scanner which slows it down

If you have such a scanner, you may try to exclude the cache files from scanning, or disable the cache.

For me, TC's inability to cache folder thumbs (that is, the four-way image "thumb" that appears on the folders themselves) essentially kills the usefulness of the thumbs functionality in many cases.

TC will not display ANY image thumbs in a folder until it has finished redisplaying the subfolder thumbs... for the nth time in the last hour, usually. Sometimes (for folders with many subfolders that are themselves frequently packed with very large images) it is a minute or more before the file thumbs display.

In the meantime I end up switching to another tool to do something I'd prefer to use TC for. Very inefficient. Very frustrating.

Using XnView for "*." is marginally faster than the Explorer method, but only just.

This is an implementation issue, NOT a performance issue. Why not simply cache the folder thumbs too? I need them, so turning off folder thumbs would completely miss the point.

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated, though.

IMHO the entire thumb caching and display logic needs revisiting.
