It would be great if I could find the directories without files and subdirs.
I cannot see any option for this criteria in the search dialog.

You may try Lefteous' DirsizeCalc content Plugin. After you have installed it, you can select it in the 'plugins'-tab in the search dialog. Define the following two rules and then do the search:
Contains files = no
Contains subdirectories = no
