Why does TC open Windows explorer?

I am using TC 7.02a for just a few days and noticed that clicking on a link in a drive's root directory opens Windows Explorer rather than the content of the link that prior versions always did.

Should that be happening?

Not confirmed, 7.02a, XP SP2.
Could you try with a clean ini?

Yes, I am using XP SP2 with TC 7.02a.

I opened a command prompt window and ran your suggested command above. That worked to open a fresh TC with all drives, but it had no effect on the problem.

that is, When I click on the lnk called "taptax" in the left panel, instead of the website modules being listed, windows explorer opens and the path to those modules is shown in the windows explorer window, not the left panel of TC.

I should explain that I have data saved on various secure servers at my employer. Some of my drives are on my computer. Others are links to the servers where the data is stored. I can access the data via Windows explorer, but I cannot access them in the TC panels directly.

This problem seems to be only for the data that is stored on servers, not on my computer. All data on my computer opens in the TC panels as it always has in previous TC versions.

TC does the following: It looks into the lnk to check whether it points to a directory. If yes, TC tries to display this directory. If not, TC will just tell the System to run the link, just like when you double click on it in Explorer.

After talking with our OIT people, here is what I can tell you for the moment.

I have access to a secured and back up drive called "N" which has my data on it.

The root of N also has a shortcut-to-taptax and a shortcut-to-taptax2, the production and development website files respectively.

When clicking on the shortcut-to-taptax, the path is resolved as: \\fs.nd.edu\~taptax

OIT tells me that is all the information available to give you, since the actual files are located somewhere in the many secured web servers the university has. The two letters 'fs'
mean the university is using a program called 'netfile'.

In order to give you a definitive answer, I will have to follow your suggestion in two different situations: home and work.

Right now I am home due to the holidays. From home I have to activate a VPN Client program from Cisco Systems. The University uses that as a secure avenue to permit staff and faculty to access data stored in Univ computers from home. The version currently being used is 4.6.02.0011.
There is no access to any of these servers without the VPN client. So I first establish contact. Then I open TC. Then within TC I click on the "N" drive which opens the root menu. Before doing anything else, on the command line I type in your requested command.

Nothing happens. that is the line that shows the directory path is the line I take to be the command line in the panel. When entering your command on that line, nothing happens. It acts as though it is not a command line in DOS.

I then clicked on the "Commands" key work on the menu and selected "Run DOS" from it. In that window the drive shown was N:\>. The directory command showed the links to be there. So I typed in the link as "taptax.lnk". The response was the system opened windows explorer and listed the root menu of taptax. The DOS command line stayed as N:\>. Typing "taptax" resulted in an error message saying the command "taptax" was not recognized.

The only other thing left to do that I can see is for me to repeat this process when I am on campus, which means that the VPN client is not in the data stream. I don't know if this will improve matters but I am willing to try, especially if that would be important to you. If I am to do this, it will be when I return to campus, which likely would be on 1/3 or 1/4/08. There is a small possibility I could be on-campus on 12/27 or 12/28.

You can see the directory path both over the file panels and below the panels. The command line is the one below.

If you can't see the command line then use "Configuration" -> "Layout" -> "Show command line" - or press Shift+RightArrow.

Thank you! for correcting my misunderstanding and, more importantly, fixing my problem!

As it turned out your command had to be enhanced to the following due to an apparent convention at the university:
cd \\fs.nd.edu\~taptax\www

The website modules seem to be saved in the directory "www" and not in the root directory.

Making the above change to your instruction causes all the modules in the website to be placed in either panel, just as it was in earlier TC versions.

Will this use of a command on the command line be necessary in all future TC versions? Is there something in Help that I could read about why this is happening?

Anyway, thank you so much. I really appreciate your taking the time to solve this problem. You have created an excellent tool in Total Commander. I hope to learn more about its many functions as I get more time to use it.

Playing with the instruction you gave me & placing it in the command line:

and adding the "www" as the root directory gave me nothing at first.

Then I added a backward slash and that made a big difference.

As soon as I added the back slash (cd \\fs.nd.edu\~taptax\www\) the command line showed a drop down menu of all the folders within the www directory. Selecting one of those folders and clicking it caused the list of files in the folder to be placed in the active panel giving me access to those files. It also blanked out the command line. But the prompt to the left of the command line showed the path of the folder whose contents were displayed.

Once the contents of a folder were displayed, then I could access the contents of the other folders in the root directory by using the UP arrows in the upper left corner of each panel.

While this is not the same behavior as the versions prior to 7.02a, it does give me a work-around until TC's former behavior is restored.

My apologies for not replying sooner, especially since my last post on this topic was in 2007. I just saw that I did not indicate when things were working as they otherwise did.

using this string sequence on TC command line in the current version 7.55a makes everything work as formerly: "cd \\fs.nd.edu\~taptax2\www\" that is, this command places the content of the "taptax2" top directory in the window having focus.

This is just a very, very great tool!! Again, my apologies for not having given a reply sooner than today.
