Unable to open ZIP files

On my Windows Mobile 6 Standard device, I'm unable to open or view ZIP files. When I click on them in Total Commander, nothing happens. When I click on them in the Windows File Explorer, Total Commander opens to the containing directory, but nothing happens. Any ideas? Is there something in the registry I can check?

No, it should work immediately. Is there something special about these zip files? Do they start with "PK" 03 04? Some newer versions of Winzip seem to create files which start with "PK" 00 00, which isn't yet supported by TC Pocket (but will be in the next version).

No, they should be standard ZIP files, one of them I made myself with ZipGenius. I'll find some more to test to make sure it isn't my files that are corrupt or something and report back.

You can try to unpack one of the plugins available here:

If you can't unpack these, then please send me a sample zip file which you cannot unpack, so I can test it here in a debugger.

Ah, this might be a clue. I tried unpacking totaliso.zip, which is ~144kb and got the same result - clicked on it, nothing happened. So I went to File > Edit and it gave me the error "Error, file too big! Max 64k are supported!"

EDIT: Hmm, looks like edit just opens the text editor, so of course that's not going to work...nevermind

Now this might help, I used Total Commander to create a text file on the Smartphone itself. I can open that one fine. It's file size is 7.2k.

EDIT: I also created another larger ZIP file using Total Commander, file size 328k and it opens fine.

So there's something about my ZIP files that it's not liking. That includes the totaliso.zip that is on the plugins page.

Basically you should doubleclick on zip file. Single click is not enough.

I have no problem to unpack TotalIso.zip from

on my devices with Total Commander Pocket. But I don't have a device with Windows Mobile 6.

How did you try to unpack it? You need to press the action button on it, then select all files, and then press '5' to copy the selected files to some local directory.

Interesting. I wonder if it's a WinMo6 + downloaded file thing. Because like I said, zip files I create with Total Commander work fine. It only seems to be files that I download on the phone that won't work.

When I click the action button on the file, nothing at all happens. I know what should happen, because I can try it on zip files created with TC. But it just sits as if I hadn't clicked anything at all when it doesn't work.

When I get home and can attach to the device through Activesync, I'll try copying over totaliso.zip from my computer, to see if it's maybe Pocket Internet Explorer that's corrupting(?) the file.

Thanks for your help so far on this. It's really not a big deal, but I like to try to solve things that don't work but should.

Well guess what...I copied totaliso.zip over with Activesync and Total Commander opened it right up!

Sooo somehow downloading .zip files with PIE corrupts them in a way that TC can't deal with. Interesting.

I'll have to do some digging on this one, but it's clear that it's not TC that's at fault here.

Sounds like Pocket IE is downloading the zip files as text, converting all Unix style line breaks to Windows line breaks (<cr><lf>). Try associating the zip extension with a program, e.g. TC Pocket.
