TC 7.02a - FTP on different ports not connecting

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

TC 7.02a - FTP on different ports not connecting

Post by *gybe »

I am using Serv-U FTP server on port 1337 on my workstation and Total Commander as a FTP client on remote location. I cannot login completely if I am using different port than 21. I am behind a router but I have configured it myself, tested various ports, opened them and everything but TC always gets stuck after successfully logging in with username and password but it just stays on 'LIST' and doesn't do a thing. If I try to connect over LAN to that port on the same FTP server it goes flawlessly. In this case the client computer connects via router also.

Anybody having the same problem?

2gybe: you still need at least 2 ports for a ftp connection (one for control session, one for data session)

May this helps http://slacksite.com/other/ftp.html

same here. tried everything, every setting available in tcmd and in serv-u ftp and nothing. with IE it works ok.

with total commander only works if you disable the windows firewall :( but i can't figure out why.

I have disabled both XP firewalls but the error remains. I haven't tried passive mode yet though. I tested different port with a friend of mine and it works both passive and active mode. I just hope my router will open the right port with the passive mode. Well I have read a bit more about both active and passive mode and I think I might trick my router this time. Thumbs up for friday, guys! :) Otherwise TC rocks on every basis when its usefulness is most appreciated. This means that I won't change the FTP client for nothing and will try to dig deeper into the sphere of my problem.

Kenner, what port do you use? If you are not behind a router it should work okay.

Hi all again!

I have tried the passive mode and it still doesn't work. With other clients it connects just fine in passive mode. Any ideas?

Perhaps posting a log from TC and from a working client.

actually I have a solution. It is the passive mode issue. You see the weird thing about TC is this that when you enable the passive mode in configuration - options - ftp - use passive mode by default it won't make any difference at all. Even my ftp server reports that the passive mode from the client was not requested. Another issue with this setting is that it resets itself on unknown basis - well maybe regurarely but I didn't care about it to be honest. I discovered the mother of all the trouble. The passive mode should be enabled in the FTP connect dialog (ctrl + f) in the setting of the profile you are using.

PROBLEM SOLVED! Just fix the thingy about passive mode in settings which is very strange to me.

gybe,

The thingy in settings sets the Passive mode for all Ctrl-N connections and all newly defined Ctrl-F connections.

Indeed you have to switch to passive mode for each saved connection separately, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to access connections both by active and passive mode. For example, we had a large server at the university which did not support passive mode.
