Well, I tend to agree with Roman that linear selection is the most probably needed one, so I think it's logical that the selection method in any view (including thumbnail) follows this.
The difference in thumbnail view is that linear means horizontal, while in detail view it is vertical. This is a bit disturbing, but...
But, hey, I'm not really against the rectangular selection, I just don't really miss it.
