I hope this post's subject is self-explanatory enough
Browsing panel history (alt + left/right arrow) messes up tab distribution because history is not tab-specific. History should be restricted to focussed tab history, so that each tab would remember its own history only.
(present state: if i just visitted tab 'X' before focussing on tab 'Y', tab Y's history will contain my incursion in tab X, and revert to it, thus becoming a approximate clone of tab X instead of just browsing its own history. Locking tabs (allowing dir change) doesn't seem to prevent this problem)
I hope i'm being clear enough... So how about it ? Is anybody else annoyed by the present way of handling tabs and history?
Shouldn't history better be tab-specific ?

Shouldn't history better be tab-specific ?

Was discussed e.g. here, including the author's comment: http://ghisler.ch/board/viewtopic.php?p=115864#115864
Who the hell is General Failure, and why is he reading my disk?

Statusquo: ok i've read that thread, and i agree with the conclusion that both kind of histories should be available. But since the discussion has already taken place and i have no new argument, i guess that leaves it at that...
ghisler: or does it ? (*hopes*)
...
I think the issue is what do you use history for.
For short-term historic jumps, like for example jumping back and forth between two directories, tab history is often missed. In fact, in such cases it is not a matter of having forgotten where the dir was, but a mere shortcut to it, simpler than browsing the disk.
For long-term historic jumps, like 'i was in that dir yesterday and don't remember or care in which tab that was', then panel history (or even, possibly, global history), is needed.

tab - specific history
The discussion in the other thread is only about to replace the global history with the tab - specific history.
I think we can use both at the same time. Not only optional as an Ini- setting.
1. The button for the TabHistory could be shown everywhere, (right click on the history-button) or even in the buttonbar:
Tab 1 >
Tab 2 >
Tab 3 >
............Popup menu of
............Last visited directories
............Another folder
............History per Tab
2. Historylist use highlights ?
Keep the global history as it is...
- one tab is always active
- and use color markings (highlighting or whatever) to show the specific tab - history.
Since we discuss "Color Coded Tabs" it would be a nice feature to use the tabcolor for highlighting the [Alt] + [Arrow down] list
.
3. Press the key for 3 seconds or longer ?
One could invoke the Tab-specific history by mouse or keyboard for less than 3 seconds.
Pressing longer than 3 seconds will expand the global history list.
We could use a INI setting whether to use this feature or not and which history is shown by default.

Stance: how it would work does not matter to me, but i'm glad you agree. I don't understand the resistance to a tab-specific history which wouldn't replace the global (or panel) history...
(in fact i'm replying just to boost this matter up once more on top of the list. But I won't make an habit of it, I swear!
