copy over network

The behaviour described in the bug report is either by design, or would be far too complex/time-consuming to be changed

copy over network

Post by *ypsilon »

I quite often get copy errors while copying long files over the network with TC own copy functionality. Well, actually I dont get any errors, but the result file isnt the same as the source file. Which is even worse, since I might not even get the failed copy problem before it's too late (for example I have deleted the source already... or instead of copy used move).

Now switched the copy option to "Use copy+paste via explorer" and doesnt seem to have this problem anymore.

Perhaps you are using a RAID 1 configuration on the target machine? See Possible data loss using Compatibility mode on Windows Vista.

Sorry, no Vista, nor Raid of any kind.

Just one desktop computer, one IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad R60, one gigabit switch, 2 cables. Both computers have gigabit lan cards. Both have Genuine Windows XP SP2 with all possible updates from microsoft update site.

Also when I moved with TC from desktop to laptop one file and the error occurred, laptops windows gave error something about delayed write fail or something. Since I was moving the file not copying it, it didnt bother TC in desktop to delete the file after move, so basically I lost the file... next day I moved (well this time copied just in case) one big file with desktops TC from laptop to desktop one another big file and there was no error whatsoever. A little bit later when I tried to install the program (the file was installer) in the middle of installing it gave some error about wrong CRC check or something... anyway after that I checked both files (in laptop and desktop), they had identical size, but different CRC checksums (created with TC's "Create CRC Checksum (SFV format)...").

Then I turned TC to use copy+paste via explorer and no such file corruptions happened after that.

btw I dont recall ever having such problems before when I used 10Mbit network... So now with gigabit network when file copy speed's bottleneck is in computer's harddrives writing speed, not in network anymore, something unexpected happens?

Try to use the compatibility mode for copy over network.
Configuration - Options - Copy/Delete : Enable option "Use compatibility mode for the following drives" and enter just a backslash ( \ ) as driveletter

delayed write fail
This is an error message coming from the Windows write cache. It happens when the cache tries to write the file to disk, and this fails (e.g. because of a network error). When this happens, the WriteFile or CopyFileEx function may already have completed with success, so Total Commander deletes the file...

Well, old request. Give us an option to verify the moved/copied files, before deleting them.

Delayed Write Failures

Post by *jlp_engineer »

I often receive delayed write failures when copying files to or from a client PC running Windows XP Pro SP2 to or from a NAS box running Linux. When I change the option in TC to change the copy mode from "Also use big file copy mode" to "Use default method only" the file copies over the network to and from the NAS box will always complete without error :?:

Do I really lose speed by not using the big file copy mode?

Thanks[/quote]

I'm surprised because the big file copy mode should actually have the OPPOSITE effect: bypassing the delay-write cache! Maybe the buffer size is the problem here?

I will try smaller or larger buffer sizes and see if that helps. Thank you Christian, for your advice.

Hi I have the same problem with TC 7.03 where I try to copy 3 large archives (gz) where each are around 2,5 gb size.
I have 2 computers connected with cable to my Linksys router (100 mbit).
When I copy these 3 files, 2 of them have CRC errors on the destination PC, on the source PC, none have CRC errors :-(
Best regards
Lars

Have you tried a firware update of your router?

If this doesn't help, try compatibility mode as suggested above.
