Photoshop Droplets in TC

Post by *artem-dp »

Hi all

Has anybody faced the problem in TC for handling Adobe Photoshop droplets? I mean that drag and drop feature works fine for droplets in Explorer but TC doesn't allow to move image files directly to droplet. Any suggestions?

for me it works fine - take a image file in the TC - move it to PS and drop it - after that the file is opened - no problem for me

also in older TC versions it was working fine

I mean something different from drag in TC and drop to PS. I meant drag and drop within TC, one file d&d to droplet PS file (.exe) and make droplet executing.

Sorry for mistake with language, please moderator move this topic to English forums.

TC doesn't support drag&drop on executables in panels (besides on those which are registered as a packer plugin extension, but this won't help you here). This is by design, because the drag&drop export laws in Switzerland don't allow to implement this for security reasons, not even optional.

You have to drag&drop the Exe to the buttonbar and then drag&drop the image onto the button, or use some other file manager if you prefer to work the way you are used to.

You can find ghisler's anti-statement here, thread is from 2003 (German):

The reasons why drag&drop to EXE files aren't supported are the following:
1. A security risk: When you drag a file from the left to the right panel and happen to drop it on an EXE file by mistake, that program would be launched without warning!

2. Programs and data should be strictly separated, even Microsoft recommends that! Therefore it's highly unlikely to have the files and the corresponding EXE in the same folder.

3. Total Commander supports EXEs as drop targets in the button bar. Just drop the program to an empty space in the bar, and then drop the file to it to open it with that program. This gives a much better separation of programs and data.

It's comfortable if you use several exe files. But in my case I have over 100 droplets each in separate folder, which do their work when I drag image files on them. But TC doesn't allow me to do so.

I have stupid situation when I need to switch to Explorer to do my task. It's very inconvenient. Using buttons is also not a solution because of high quantity of exe files.

As :
- Drop in TC toolbar do does not allow using %T\%M as command :(
- Drop in TC toolbar do not take into account command parameter :(

Defining a generic toolbar button is a dificult task...

Alternative ?

Do not use drag and drop an create a button like this:

Code: Select all

cmd: %comspec% /c
parameter: %T\%M %S
Path: %P
...
(if droplet need to be started from their own folder change following :
parameter: %T\%M %P%S
Path: %T )

THis is even sad for a program that should be an explorer replacement.....

Using an .exe file as drop target may be comfortable just for this single task...

But caution: with each drop to copy/move a file you have to EXACTLY look where you drop the file(s). Drop it on an .exe file and it will be executed !
By chance it is "erase.exe" on friday 13th ;)

Up to now I just drop it blind into the panel, which is a pretty much more easy, comfortable and reliable behavior !

nsp,

thanks for advice, I will try

sqa_wizard,

I am glad that TC is so worried about me, but I prefer to do what I want to do, and if I move files on erase.exe is just my problem, TC shouldn't be worry about it. At least I have to have an option which I can simply turn off.

It might be slightly off-topic, but I hope someone can help me anyway.

I have created a droplet with "Better File Rename" (http://www.publicspace.net/windows/BetterFileRename/). The dpt-File is available on my desktop and whenever I drag&drop files on the dpt-File they are renamed.

But now I want the droplet to be available in my TC Button-Bar. I have added an icon and the command is "C:\Desktop\droplet.dpt" but that is not working. Do I have to add a parameter? Or what do I have to change to make that droplet working?

Regards,

Thorsten

You have to write te correct path. I am almost certain
C:\Desktop\droplet.dpt
is not the correct path.
Desktop path is something like C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\<localized name of desktop>\
At least it is on my Windows XP machine.

Greetings,
Henrie
